Move to develop Sonbeel area

KARIMGANJ, July 13 – The Central Government has given green signal for undertaking development schemes for greater Sonbeel as well as for socio-economic uplift of the fishermen community of Sonbeel.

Sonbeel, the second largest beel of Asia situated in Karimganj district, covering three Assembly constituencies viz Ratabari, South Karimganj and Badarpur. Subhasnagar, Bhairabnagar, Anandapur, Gamaria. Nagendranagar, Baruala, Benodini, Nayatilla, Gobindaganj, Gandhinagar, Fatehpur GPs are situated along Sonbeel. Fishermen communities live in these GPs which comprise more than 3000 hectares of land.

With a view to chalk out proposed development projects for Sonbeel, the Karimganj Deputy Commissioner convened an urgent meeting with the officials of Fishery, Agriculture, Veterinary, Forest, Soil Conservation and Tourism Departments. Dr M Angamuther, DC, instructed all the departments to prepared schemes for the undertaking of development of Sonbeel.

Sonbeel Fishery Cooperative Society expressed satisfaction over the Central Government’s move in making Sonbeel a developed area. They think that in order to develop Sonbeel the Central government will have to develop the socio-economic conditions of the fishermen communities.

In Sonbeel, there are 2000 hectares of cultivable land where sali boro paddies are cultivated besides Rabi crops cultivation. These vast areas of land should be protected from flood, demanded the fishery Cooperative Society.
