National Highway Police station closed

SILCHAR, July 13: Though the Government exchequer is full of money and crores of money is being invested on different projects, the government is least bothered about the safety of the people and matter of public interest, the people here alleged. Being unable to pay the house rent, the police administration was compelled to close the police chowki in National High Road area in Silchar though some places adjoining the National High Road are identified as sensitive spots.

The police chowki closed on July 1 last and is in vicinity of the tea garden; an area occupied by heterogeneous composition of people living together. After the closing down of the police station, questions are being raised on the total security system and law and order management in the area.

Almost after 11 years, the chowki was set up on public demand. The chowki had been running jointly under the enterprises of police and public in the area. The people here went to meet the Cachar Police Superintendent for a solution of the problem of rent but he was unable to do anything in the case. The local people have been continously demanding the State Government to set up a thana in the area but their pleas went unheard off.

Police infrastructure should be adequately prepared to fit into the criminal justice system in India, opined Justice Malimath in his Commission’s report. SOURCE: THE SENTINEL
