SILCHAR, Aug 3: A delegation team of AUDF recently visited the relief camp of village Sonpur of Joypur under Lakhipur sub-division yesterday and came to know that on July 18, a group of extremists with arms and ammunition suddenly attacked the villagers, destroyed and burned their houses, killed four cows and four goats. The villagers ran away and saved their lives. After the incident on July 19, the villagers of the Sonpur village had taken shelter in the No. 288 Doloichora Prathomik Vidyalaya of Village Purbo Kanakpur under Rajabazar Development Block in Cachar District.
Extremists burnt 26 numbers of houses of that village and around 55 families with approximately 247 people were affected due to that incident. The victims have taken shelter at the above mentioned school.
The delegates having discussion with the villagers came to know that after the incident one Additional Deputy Commissioner from the administration had visited the school, but till date sub-divisional officer of Lakhipur did not attend the site.
Those victims were provided rice, dal, salt and two litres of mustard oil as government aid, and they were also supplied with phenyl and water purifying medicines. One health check up camp was also organized by the government. The delegation team met one Dinesh Chandra Barman, a senior citizen of that area, of Purbo Kanakpur village who is the president of the relief committee. Dinesh Burman explained that till date no initiative has been taken by the government to rehabilitate the victims. He also demanded for sanctioning of houses under the Indira Abash Yojana for each diplaced family and for setting up of a police out post in the area. THE SENTINEL
