Broad-gauge work to resume after monsoon: Mamata Banerjee

SILCHAR, Aug 2: Following Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s assurance to provide enough security to the jinxed Silchar-Lumding broad-gauge projeMamata Banerjee announced that the project would commence after the monsoon.ct, Indian Railway Minister

Banerjee said the Rail Board would talk to the contractors engaged in the National project who had withdrawn themselves alleging lack of security. ‘‘Rail board would ask the contractors to resume the work immediately after monsoon’’, added Banerjee. Spokesperson of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Pradip Dutta Roy today met Banerjee at her residence in Kolkata and urged upon to take personal initiative for resumption of work in the hill section.

Banerjee informed that the Asom Chief Minister had assured he would provide adequate security in the hill section once the monsoon was over. Responding to Dutta Roy’s plea for renaming the Silchar Railway station as Bhasha Shahid Station, Banerjee said the process of renaming was almost complete and hinted that she would declare it within September as her durga puja gift to the people of the Barak Valley. Banerjee further informed that the Silchar-Agartala passenger train would also be renamed as Bhasha Shahid Express.

It is to be noted that contractors engaged in broad-gauge conversion work had virtually surrendered the contract as violence and extortion by the Dimasa militants had made it impossible to carry the work in the hill terrain. Even after the arrest of Black Widow boss Jewel Garlosa, the contractors were not ready to resume the work until complete security measures were adopted.

According to sources, the Black Widow might again target the Lumding-Silchar train as Home Secretary G K Pillai, in his recent visit to Guwahati, made it clear that the Centre would not sit in the discussion table with the Jewel faction until the Dimasa militants surrender their arms unconditionally. Further Pillai had hinted that the change of nomenclature of the NC Hill District Dima Hasao Raji was not in the priority list of the Centre and this might aggravate violence in the hills. The Black Widow had already made it clear that attack on the train was a major tactic on their part to put pressure on the government. Meanwhile, eight MI pistols, eight sophisticated walkie-talkies and some ammunition were seized by the Aizwal police recently. These arms were dispatched from Myanmar to be delivered to the Jewel faction at some undisclosed places in NC Hills, sources added. THE SENTINEL
