BADARPUR, Aug 1 – The Municipality elections, 2009 passed off peacefully at Badarpur and Karimganj without any major disturbances. About 11,337 voters of Badarpur town exercised their franchise to elect representatives of the 4 wards under Badarpur Civic Board. On the other hand, at Karimganj, 44,385 voters cast their votes to elect 27 ward commissioners.
Ignoring torrential rains and tremendous cloudy weather, voters arrived at the polling stations in time for casting their votes. In some polling stations of Badarpur, the ruling Congress and its workers and supporters allegedly created some disturbances. But the police brought the situation under control. The BJP alleged that in all the polling stations of Badarpur, Congress has resorted to rigging. But no untoward incidents like booth capturing, ballot paper snatching, group clashes etc. have been reported from any part of Badarpur, said official sources. For holding the entire election smoothly and peacefully, the Karimganj and Badarpur towns were brought under tight security vigil. Karimganj administration sources said that overall 70 per cent votes cast in these two towns. The Karimganj DC Dr M Angamuthu personally inspected the entire situation in Karimganj and Badarpur town polling stations alongwith the ADMs. ASSAM TRIBUNE
