ABVP dharna fails

SILCHAR, Sept 4: ABVP today had to face embarrassment as its dharna in front of the Assam University virtually failed as a group of students literally over-powered the agitators and entered the University campus to attend classes. ABVP staged the sit-in dharna in protest against the University’s sudden decision to postpone the student body election scheduled on September 10. Assam University issued the election notification recently. But, on August 31, they suddenly announced that election could not be held as they had not received approval from the Ministry of Human Resources.

A seminar was also held in the Ecology Department, as scheduled, and banks, post-office along with office inside the campus continued to operate as usual. However, there was some tension at the main gate when ABVP cadres restrained AU students from entering into the campus. Students, however, claimed that they wanted to attend classes.

ABVP alleged that AU authorities had actually bowed down to the pressure of NSUI. ABVP sources said, election should be held before the puja otherwise the students will not able to participate as after the puja vacation, examination will start. Meanwhile, a source in the ABVP today hinted that NSUI was allegedly instrumental in today’s incident. THE SENTINEL
