Congress leader Jahar Banik found dead in Dholai

SILCHAR, Sept 15: In a strange incident, the body of a popular Congress leader as well as a businessman of Karimganj was found in a tea garden near Dholai in Cachar district. Jahar Banik (48) was a middle-rank Congress leader. He was last seen at the Silchar Sumo stand on Monday evening.

Sources said his body was found lying near Putikhal TE which is 12 km from Dholai PS along the Asom-Mizoram border. His body bore deep injury marks. It was reported that Banik had come to see off his gurudev at the Silchar Airport after which he visited some of his customers who deal with him in his utensil business.

Family sources further said that Banik had called his daughter that he would start from Silchar in the evening. But, he was missing after he made the call. Meanwhile, Silchar police has detained a businessman from the town for preliminary interrogation. Since he has not been arrested, the police did not disclose his name.

On the other hand, Dholai police sources hinted that a highway dacoit gang might have committed the crime. Last year, a young businessman, Sahinder Singh, was similarly kidnapped and later killed by highway dacoits. But, in Banik’s case, the theory could not be applied as he had reportedly not collected money from his customers and also that he made his last call to his daughter from Silchar. Therefore, how did his body reach Dholai?

Karimganj town Congress president Tapas Purkayastha along with some party colleagues received Banik’s body from Silchar Medical College and Hospital where his post-mortem was done. Later, they reached Karimganj with the body at night. Banik leaves behind his old father, wife and two daughters. THE SENTINEL
