Hailakandi pledges to curb terrorism, foster peace

HAILAKANDI, Sept 2 – On the occasion of Sadbhavana Divas, various programmes were organised in Hailakandi district under the auspices of the district administration.

In the morning, a meeting was held at the conference hall of the DCs office under the presidentship of Deputy Commissioner Tapan Chandra Goswami. Heads of all the government departments attended the meeting and took the Sadbhavana pledge against terrorism.

Later a rally was brought out in the main thoroughfares of Hailakandi town under the joint auspices of the District administration and non-governmental organisation Shagnik. The members of various voluntary organisations, state and central government officials, media persons, and educationists also attended the rally with banners and placards. The members of the rally raised slogans against the terrorism.

A meeting held at the office of Shagnik to mark the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas. It was presided over by veteran educationist Bijoy Kumar Dhar and addressed among others by Tapan Chandra Goswami, Police Super Bibekananda Das and president of Shagnik, Dipak Chakraborty.

Sports persons feted: Various sports persons were felicitated here on August 29 last under the auspices of the Hailakandi unit of Barak Valley Sports Journalists Association.

The felicitation function held at the club house of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium here was conducted by the president of the Association, Riten Bhattacharjee.

Those who were felicitated included Rupam Nath and Sulekha Sinha (Cricket), Amjad Hussain Choudhury (Football), Mithulal Debnath and Antara Nath (Taekwando), Monichouba Singha and Basanti Singha (Hockey). Former footballer Bijit Dhar was also felicitated for his lifetime contribution to the sports.

It was attended by MLA Rahul Roy as chief guest. The function was also addressed by Police Super of Hailakandi, Bibekananda Das, Manash Kanti Das, Bijay Kumar Dhar, secretary of Hailakandi, District Sports Association (DSA), Saibal Sengupta, Journalist Santosh Kumar Mazumdar, Sankar Choudhury, secretary of the association, and Dwijendralal Das, among others.

All the speakers stressed the need of felicitation of the sports persons in order to encourage them. They said that the young players should be encouraged regularly for their future development. The initiative of the sports journalists of Barak Valley must be appreciated and it should be continued, they added.

National Sports Day was also observed on the occasion and various speakers spoke on the topic. Later in a meeting of the sports journalists of Hailakandi district, a 12-member executive committee of the Hailakandi district committee of Barak Valley Sports Journalists Association with Dipu Dey as president and Sankar Choudhury as secretary, was formed.
