Joint Action Committee stages sit-in demonstration

SILCHAR, Sept 16: The Joint Action Committee of the four employees’ unions – All Assam Higher Secondary Teachers’ and Employees’ Association, Assam State Employees’ Federation, Silchar Municipal Employees’ Union and All Assam Development Authority Employees’ Union – today staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Cachar Deputy Commissioner office for four hours in support of their slew of demands.

Employees’ Federation district secretary Pradip Choudhury said their demands include payment of salary and other benefits at par with that of the Central Government employees and withdrawal of the new anti-employees’ pension bill. Their demands also included distribution of 14 essential food items through PDS, filling up of vacant posts, scrapping of retention system and regularization of services of State employees, bonus at the rate of 8.33 per cent and employment to the dependent of deceased employees on compassionate grounds. The employee unions also cautioned that if their demands were not met, they might be forced to intensify their agitation. THE SENTINEL
