SILCHAR, Oct 8: The much awaited Cultural and Research Centre Hall of the Rongmei Nagas at Kagaluang Rongmei Naga village, Meherpur, near the southern fringe of this town was inaugurated with all the verve and gaiety yesterday. Attired in their traditional dress and costumes, old and young, men and women of the Rongmei Naga community attended the occasion with full enthusiasm.
With the arrival of the chief guest and guests of honour, the morning session began with huai-ding (mass prayer) led by Eraipow Kamei, Chaluthau Kamei, Lungaifunnang Riamei and Babusing Gangmei.
It was followed by the inauguration of Asom Rongmei Naga Cultural and Research Centre Hall built under the centrally sponsored tribal development fund of Rs 11 lakh passed by Urban Development Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala.
Poupai – Chapriak Research and Development Council, North East India, secretary Lungthaurei Kamei welcomed the August Assembly who, in brief, spoke about the background of the Centre and the objectives before it.
It was, as he said, to protect, preserve and promote Rongmei culture and heritage, besides carrying on research work on their ethnicity and history, delve deep into the past and present and explore the unexplored in the interest of the community.
The welcome cultural dance was presented by Ragailuang of Ujantarapur and the other cultural troupe Kaguilang of this town. Besides presentation to the chief guest and guests of honour, village elders of the community were also felicitated on the occasion. Chief guest Dinesh Prasad Goala, while addressing the gathering, expressed his deep appreciation towards the efforts of the Rongmei Nagas across Barak Valley for their peaceful coexistence and their sincere endeavours to work to keep their tradition and culture alive.
Goala said that he was confident with the inauguration of this centre and that it would provide them all the incentives and inspiration to improve further in their noble cause.
WEP and BC and Agriculture Minister Promila Rani Brahma, an invited guest, could not attend due to the tragedy at Baliachung. Rongmei Naga village elders wished all the best for the Centre in their message of good will. Competitive cultural dance by villagers and traditional songs by Tuna Le Gaan and Lakpui Le Meipu delighted the audience.
