Government won’t bow down to JDA demands: Himanta Biswa Sarma

SILCHAR, Nov 22: Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today laid the foundation stone of the Mother and Child Hospital in the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) campus today. The health centre will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore, the minister stated.

Later he visited all the wards of the SMCH and personally talked to some of the patients. Dr Sarma was accompanied by Excise Minister as well as Chairman of SMCH governing body Gautam Roy, parliament secretary Ajit Singh, College superintendent Dr SS Dhar.

Later talking to the media, the Health Minister clearified that the government would not bow down to the agitating Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA). Sarma said if necessary, the government will close the SMCH although the hopital will operate for patients.

Claiming the demands of the junior doctors as unjustified, Dr Sarmah said the JDA is demanding Rs 30,000 per month as salary which is even higher than the salary of the teaching staff. THE SENTINEL
