Silchar Press Club to act when ultimatum expires

SILCHAR, Jan 3: Following assault on Anup Kanti Das, a reporter and cameraman of Barak Television Network (BTN) and Dainik Prantojyoty, by a group of junior doctors of Silchar Medical College and Hospital on the night of January 1, Silchar Press Club at an emergent meeting on Sunday strongly condemned the incident and demanded immediate action against the assailants.

Memorandum in this regard was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Cachar by the members of Press Club led by its secretary Shankar Dey.

It was stated that the incident of assault on Anup Das took place while he was covering the reported death of a child in the hospital and recording subsequently the statements of the bereaved parents and other patients who allegedly blamed the doctors concerned for the unfortunate death due to their negligence. The FIR filed by Anup Das alleged that after being badly assaulted by the doctors, challenging his right as a journalist was hit on head, face and cheeks. His digital camera, charger of movie camera and a golden chain were snatched.
72-hour ultimatum was given to the DC and the SP to arrest the culprits and initiate exemplary punishment to them. Shankar Dey said, “Before the expiry of the ultimatum if no action was taken, Press Club would further meet and decide about the next course of action. THE SENTINEL
