The Assam Engineering College is located at the Jalukbari district which is an area in Guwahati. The institute was founded in 1955 and is recognized as one of the leading technical institutes in the North Eastern India. Not only this, the Assam engineering college is also recognized as the first engineering college in the north western part of India offering under graduate engineering programs. The name and fame of Assam Engineering College is not only limited in the north western part of India but it has been acclaimed as the first technical institute all over the country. The college has also gained approval from AICTE that is the All India Council for Technical Education.  

The Assam engineering college is also the nucleus of numerous scholastic as well as other auxiliary activities where the engineering students can study and at the same time spend some of their time in the other recreational activities. There are various Bachelor Degree courses offered by the university in the fields of Chemical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial & Production Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering as well as Computer Sc. & Engineering.

Other than the Bachelor degree programs, there are numerous masters degree courses offered in the fields such as Civil Engineering, Computer Applications (MCA), Industrial & Prod. Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering. For the aspiring students who wish to excel in the field of Soil Mechanics & Hydraulics, the university offers Ph. D facilities.

All the courses that are made available for the students at Assam Engineering College are affiliated to the Gauhati university which is considered as the education centre of the North Indian region.

For the students coming from the other parts of the country for pursuing the courses, there are 9 hostels for the students the distribution for which is made. In these hostels, 8 are meant for the undergraduates in which 7 are offered to the male students and 1 is for the female students. There is one hostel for the male students in the post graduate programs proffered by the university.
