Kaziranga National Park
Explore the huge variety of wild life, come to Kaziranga national park. It is located in Assam in the north east part of India. It is the home of about two third of world’s population, famous horned rhinoceroses along with a large breeding population of elephants, water buffalo and swamp deer. Wild life conservation was the motive behind its establishment and today its boasts with the world’s highest density of tigers.
Kaziranga is located in the Jorhat Nawgaon district 217 km from Guwahati, which lies on the edge of Eastern Himalaya. It covers an area of 430 sq. km. and surrounded by Brahmaputra River on the north and by the Mikir Hills on the South.
Initially this area was declared as the game reserve in 1908 to save one horn rhino and later became the tiger reserve in 2006. Poachers kill rhino for their horn. As theses horns use to get sold, in international market, for US $ 50000. It is also recognized as wildlife bird sanctuary where visiting birds are from various countries. Elephant rides are used to explore entire national park. It offers the best diversity of mammals
It has 35 different mammals’ species present in this park and 15 out which are threatened. One-Horned Rhinoceros, Water Buffalo (Wild Asiatic), sambar , gaur , elephants , Indian Muntjac, wild boar, Bengal Fox hog deer, Large Indian Civet, Indian Tigers, Leopards , Pangolins, Sloth Bear, Eastern Swamp Deer, Golden Jackal , Assamese Macaque etc. are some of the major mammals specie which are found in this park.
It is one the favorite destination of migratory birds. Major among them are Goose (White-fronted), Greater Adjutant, Blyth's Kingfisher, Ferruginous Duck, Stork (Black-necked), Blyth’s Kingfisher, Openbill stork(Asian), Dalmatian Pelican, White bellied Heron, Spotted Greenshank, Asian Openbill stork, etc. That’s why it is declared as world’s heritage site by UNESCO. Best time to visit here is the month of April.
