Karimganj

Karimganj

In the late nineteenth century Karimganj become division of the Sylhet District of british India. In 1983 Kaimganj became a part of Cachar district on Assam during partition of India after being served from Sylhet. Karimganj is now a district in Assam with its headquaters in Karimganj Town.   

The Karimganj district is spread out in an area of 1809 km². Karimganj is surrounded by Hailakandi district on the east, Cachar District on the northeast, Mizoram on the South, Tripura in the southwest area and on the north it is surrounded by Bangladesh. Karimganj is divided by Bangladesh by the Kushiyara River which floes between them. Noti Khal is a long and a winding canal in the district meandering in the course of the town. However, due to road transport and constructions the canal has been blocked in some areas with the help of land fills and embankments.

Karimganj is connected to the rest of India through rail and road transport. Karimganj acts as a junction of connection between Tripura and Assam. Road transport is more preferable by the people than rail transport. Many busues are used for traveling between the district and Guwahati daily. Many inter state busses are also available for traveling. The nearest airport to the Karimganj district is in Kumbhigram near Silchar. Water transport is also used for seasonal friegh and vargo shipments which links between Kolkata via Bangladesh. Water ways play an important role in trade and commercein north east India. It is capable of transporting hugr amounts of cargos and shipments heping in expansion of import and export among the countries.

Karimganj is a mixture of five assembly constituencies namely Karimganj North, Karimganj South, Patherkandi, Badarpur, and Rathbari. All of these are a part of the Karimgang Lok Sabha constituency. 
Karimganj consist of 5 Tehsils or development circles, 3 towns, 7 community development blocks, 5 police stations, 96 gram panchayats and 7 anchalik panchayats.
