North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST)
The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology or NERIST is a premier institute of science and technology established by the government of India in 1986. The institute is located at Nirjuli, Itanagar in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The institute is situated in the Papum Pare district of Nirjuli in Arunachal Pradesh at the foot hills of Eastern Himalayas. The institute is 19km away from the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar on national highway 52A.
The NERIST is managed by the board of directors. The board of directors comprise of representatives of the Minister of the Human Resource and development, AICTE, the eight beneficiary states of the North Eastern region and eminent educationist. The head of the NERIST society is the state governor of Arunachal Pradesh. The society consists of all the education ministers of the North Eastern States. Currently the head of the board of directors is Dr. Gautam Baruha, the director of Indian Institute of Science and Technology, Guwahati.
Initially NERIST was set up by the government as a project by NEC or the North Eastern Council for providing an education system that can prove to be helpful in creating technological manpower at diverse levels for bringing a developmental change in the North Eastern part of the country.
The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology is considered to be a unique institution that has exceptional, original as well as innovative academic programmes. The approach adopted by this college is the encouragement of the policy of vocationalization after the schooling that is after 10+2. Also the aim is to let only the motivated students opt for the degree level where the other students can opt for going out of the institute for enhancing their profession by having professional experience of a few years. At any time in the future, if these students make a decision to return back to the institution for improving on their qualification, they would be allowed to be a part of the institute for enhancing their knowledge.
After the 1st April 1994, the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology is completely funded as well as controlled by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi. Other than this, the institute also achieved a milestone in May 2005 by being recognized as the deemed university.
For the students, the institute offers programmes and courses at undergraduate and post graduate levels. Other than this, there are doctoral degrees also. The courses are offered in the six branches of applied sciences as well as engineering namely Computer Science and Engineering, Forestry, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Agricultural Engineering as well as Electronics and Communication Engineering.
