HAILAKANDI, Oct 5: Preparations for Durga Puja at different pandals in Hailakandi is finally over. Altogether, 34 community pujas besides institutional pujas of Barowari Kalibari, Shivbari, Bhairabbari, Ramkrishna Mission etc would be performed.

At least 20 pujas in different residential areas would also be performed according to observers here.

Security beefed up in Hailakandi

HAILAKANDI, Oct 5: A Quick Reaction Team (QRT) under the CRPF has been deployed in sensitive areas of Hailakandi district to maintain law and order.DSP (HQ) DK Saha said that the QRT is meant specially for places like Lala, Katlicherra and Hailakandi town. He said two Company CRPF jawans in separate teams would visit interior places during Durga Puja. State police sabotage team along with special branch have started monitoring various places in the district. The security personnel have been supplied with metal detectors, deep charger and other such equipments for better security measures, said Saha.In view of the red alert notice through out the State, a top-level police officials meet was held here yesterday. At the meeting, Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Das asked the other police officials to maintain strict vigil in the district to curb any untoward incident and to take the help of the QRT when necessary. sourcE: sentinel assam

SILCHAR, Oct 4: The Army apprehended one Abdul Bari (32) from the Cachar-NC Hills border with a huge quantity of explosives today. Bari, suspected to be a militant working for some Islamic fundamentalist groups, hails from Bihara in Cachar district. He has been handed over to Haflong police.

According to sources, Bari was carrying 176 detonators, including 76 electrical detonators, 12.5 kg gelatine sticks, safety fuse wire and 110 ft cortex from Cachar to NC Hills when he was arrested.

Army sources told The Sentinel that Bari confessed that he had procured the explosives from Meghalaya and that he had sold explosives to some unidentified Muslim youths in Meghalaya earlier. This in an indication that some Muslim militant outfits have been using the Meghalaya sector of the Indo-Bangladesh border to smuggle explosives and arms into the Northeast. Local Muslim youths are being used in this practice. The Army intelligence earlier cautioned the civil administration that Muslim fundamentalists have been planning to strike the Northeast during the Durga Puja, and the recent Agartala serial blasts have proved the Army report right.

Sources said Bari will be interrogated to ascertain the outfits for which he was carrying the assignment of arms to NC Hills.

Meanwhile, 57 Mountain Brigade of Army has intensified its vigil in all entry points to Silchar. The Cachar district administration has urged the Army to keep strict vigil on the probable hideouts of various militant outfits in the fringe areas of Cachar. source: sentinel assam

Santanu Ghosh marvels at Barak Valley’s penchant for moulding exotic art from buttons, glass, betelnuts, even leaves

Exotica will vie for attention with novelty this Puja, with organisers in the Barak Valley out to outdo each other in décor.

So if one Durga Puja committee has decided to replicate an entire Santhal village at the pandal, another will use something as mundane as betelnuts to build the idol.

Silchar’s Kali Mohan Road Puja, whose chief patron is Union minister for heavy industries Sontosh Mohan Dev, has decided to adorn its idols with buttons.

The craftsman, Ramkrishna Acharya from neighbouring Tripura, received kudos last year for carving out an exotic idol using tinted glass at Subhashnagar.

This year, Acharya will use 300,000 nickel buttons for Ganesh and over one crore buttons for Durga.

But no one can beat Tarapur Motor Stand Puja (picture below), which has transformed the little clearing where the pandal stands into a Santhal village of Jharkhand, complete with tribal art.

“The décor of the pandal has been elaborately planned by an artist from Calcutta, Ram Roy. Santhal madals (drums) will be used to adorn the pandal. Tribal art motifs and ethnic paintings will find place on the walls of a 55-foot bamboo temple,” Manas Purakayastha, publicity secretary of the puja committee, said.

Sukhdev Paul, a reputed artisan from Bengal’s Krishnagar, a town known for its unique pottery, is giving finishing touches to a Santhal Durga.

The idol has been decorated in traditional Santhal style, with a Chhau mask.

The puja at Traffic Colony in the railway town of Badarpur in Karimganj also promises to be a top draw this year.

Artist Barun Nath is carefully crafting Durga out of betelnuts.

The other two potential traffic-stoppers would be the ones at Yuba Samiti at Vivekananda Road in Hailakandi and Subhashnagar Puja Committee in Silchar.

A 50-foot idol of Hanuman and a 55-foot idol of Shiva, carved out in traditional Barak Valley style, will undoubtedly be the toast of the town.

As many as 500,000 oysters, specially flown in from Calcutta and South India, will be used in the 65-foot pandal at Yuba Samiti, whose patron is state minister and resident of the town Goutam Roy.

At the Subhashnagar pandal, dry leaves and bamboo mats will be the main ingredients for art.
