Kabindra will develop borak

SILCHAR, Oct 13: Without applauding Rahul Gandhi’s apparently successful catch-them-young formula, the BJP has also decided to field younger candidates in the 2011 Assembly election, hinted party MP Kabindra Purkayastha from Silchar.

In an interview with The Sentinel, the veteran leader sarcastically confessed that 78 years of ago, he was not supposed to be thrown at the electoral battle-field. Rather he was to enjoy a retired life. “But situation was such that the party high command ordered me to compete in the last general election”, explained Purkayastha, who already announced that he had played his last election this time.

At 78, Purkayastha was still agile and physically fit. “But that’s not the point”, he argued. “Young generation should be given more preference,” he said. At the same time, he maintained that preferring younger candidates did not mean that veteran politicians will be neglected. In 2011 Assembly in Asom, the BJP candidates list would be a well-balanced one with both senior and junior faces, as the ‘bottomline’ would be an image as well as ‘winnability’ of the candidate.

Refuting the allegation that Asom BJP had neglected to take in the younger generation so far, Purkayastha said, Dr Rumi Nath, an out and out fresher in politics was nominated by the party in 2006 and she had won the election in the Barkhola constituency.

Commenting on the formation of the Cachar district unit of the party, Purkayastha said, nothing had been finalized yet as the party is concentrating on explaining its base in the district enrolling new members. Names of Partha Sarathi Chanda, Kirit Bhushan Purkayastha and Parimal Suklabaidya have come up for the post of district president till now, though he hoped, more names would be projected in due time.

Purkayastha said, during his present tenure as MP, he would mainly thrust on the completion of two national projects namely the Silchar-Lumding broad gauge and East-West Corridor. “I will go to any length to get these stalled projects get going again,” he added. THE SENTINEL

Failure of Congress will be main poll issue of BJP: Kabindra Purkayastha

SILCHAR, March 16: Failure of the Congress government both in the Centre as well as in the State in completing two national projects like Silchar-Lumding broadgauge and East West corridor in Cachar district will be the main issue of the BJP in Silchar in the forthcoming general election.

This was indicated by Kabindra Purkayastha, whose name had been officially declared as party candidate by BJP’s Central Election Committee today in Delhi after a prolonged discussion that lasted almost five days.

Purkayastha was a former Minister in the Vajpaye led government as well as one of the main architect of the Saffron camp in the Northeast spoke to The Sentinel just after receiving the news of his name being finalized by central leadership.

Purkayastha who had earlier lost the election to arch rival Sontosh Mohan Dev by a mere margin of 20,000 votes, said, this time he would definitely win as the people of Silchar had been suffering terribly for the last five years.

“Rampant corruption in the administration fuelled by the ruling party leaders has stalled the wheels of development in Cachar district.” Purkayastha further said that the local MP as well as the Union Minister Dev had miserably failed to put aside the hurdles in the national projects like broadgauge.

Purkayastha said that Dev in his long political career had promoted the contractor raj and hence the main road of the town is in a pathetic condition though crores of rupees had reportedly been pumped for the construction of the road. “People would definitely seek answer to this question- where have all the money gone and Dev has to answer it”, Purkayastha said. Kabindra to contest from Silchar

NEW DELHI, March 13 – The BJP today managed to finalise the list of candidates for six seats in Assam, keeping Guwahati and Mangaldai seats pending. However, a formal announcement is expected tomorrow. The meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC), headed by national party president, Opposition Leader, LK Advani, joined Rajnath Singh besides other senior members.

Party sources said the meeting today finalised the list of candidates for six seats. Nowever, differences of opinion over candidates for Guwahati and Mangaldai seats remained. Sources said indications by Deka expressing his willingness to switch to Mangaldai seat complicated the selection process.

The Party had narrowed down the selection to Ashok Singal for the seat, surrendered by the sitting MP, Narayan Borkotoki.

Till the time of filing of this report, it was still tough fight for Bijoya Chakravarty, though she is reportedly ahead in the race for Guwahati seat, as she was backed by majority of the Central members.

Sources confided that CEC has zeroed down its list to K Daulagaphu (Diphu), Kamakhya Prasad Tassa (Jorhat), Nilomani Rai Pradhan (Dhubri), Rajen Gohain (Nagaon), Kabindra Purkayastha (Silchar) and Sudhansu Das (Karimganj). source: assam tribune
