Silchar Roads, DC Gautam Ganguly under attack

From our Staff Reporter SILCHAR, Aug 31: Amid large-scale public resentment over the pathetic condition of various roads including the national highways both the BRO and Cachar district administration have sought a month’s time to make temporary patchworks, so that these roads can be made motorable. In an urgent meeting convened recently by the Cachar DC Gautam Ganguly and attended by BRO’s chief engineer AK Tiwari of Project Puspak along with other officers from PWD, both BRO and district administration maintained that excessive rainfall for the last couple of days has worsened the situation. On the other hand, the Jana Jagaran Mancha on behalf of the residents of the Sonai road has given a 15-day deadline to the BRO and the district administration. This was stated in a joint statement by its president Asit Mukherjee, general secretary Ratan Sarma and member Kishore Bhattacharjee. Kishore Bhattacharjee is the brother of former MP Karnandu Bhattarcharjee.Dr Tiwari, who has earlier met the Union Minister SM Dev, informed that immediate patchwork would be started in the roads including one that connects Silchar with Mizoram. “Once the monsoon is over, bituminous work will be undertaken for permanent solution”, he further said. Ganguly, on the other hand, sought one month time from the agitated public of the town with the assurance that before puja, the Silchar main road would be made motorable. Expressing resentment over NBCC’s indifferent attitude towards pumping out water from Sonai Road area, Ganguly said that if the departments show a little eagerness in fulfilling their official duties, things would not have gone to such an extent.Moloy Dev, executive engineer, PWD, informed that for the maintenance work of all the roads of the entire district, only Rs 7 lakh was released this year, while the actual requirement was at least Rs 1 crore. “With this amount, how can we maintain the condition of the road,” he said. The District Administration here in Silchar has imposed a strict rule that all buses and public transport vehicles plying locally within Barak Valley have to park their vehicles at the ISBT and operate from there. But the public transport owners and fuming over this.

They call this a move by the administration to destroy their business and promote the state run ASTC. They also met Cabinet Ministers of the State Cabinet in Guwahati to discuss the issue. But the govt. has one stand, why then did we built this inter State Bus Terminus at a cost of 50 crores if you are not ready to operate from there.

Meanwhile the citizens of Silchar have welcomed this move because this has brought down the traffic chaos inside the town limits significantly. But the publilc transport ownesr are in no mood to settle down. source: http://www.observer247.com
