GUWAHATI, Feb 6 – An inquiry into the alleged diversion of Public Distribution System (PDS) items worth several crores of rupees in Karimganj district over the last few years would be initiated by the Commissioner of Hills and Barak Valley Division. This comes after the Commissioner summoned the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, the Superintendent of Food and Supplies Department, Karimganj and a few others on Thursday entertaining allegation of gross irregularities in the Public Distribution System in Karimganj district.

MC Jauhri, Commissioner of Hills and Barak Valley Division confirmed this while talking to The Assam Tribune.

The allegation has been made by Latu Dasgram Cooperative Society of Karimganj that filed a writ petition with the Gauhati High Court alleging diversion of PDS items to black market and also unauthorized cancellation of trade license after which the court directed the Commissioner of Hills and Barak Valley Division to look into the complaint.

The cooperative society has alleged that items like flour, sugar, salt and kerosene meant for the district under PDS were being diverted by the district administration officials in nexus with some local businessmen.

“Since 2002, the cooperative societies in the district including mine were allotted less than 25 per cent of the amount of items than they were actually entitled for,” said Abdul Ahad Choudhury, chairman of Latu Dasgram Cooperative Society, adding that size of the actual allocation over the years does not go parallel with that of what the cooperative societies in the district are actually getting.

He alleged that apart from rice under BPL and Annapurna Yojana, the other items like sugar, APL rice, flour, salt and kerosene hardly reached the end consumers through the fair price shops except on a few occasions during the year.

The monthly quotas of items like sugar, APL rice, flour and salt are 8,000 quintals, 11,000 quintals, 5,600 quintals and 4,000 quintals respectively. There are, at present, 33 cooperative societies in the Karimganj district.

Choudhury further informed that the Deputy Commissioner of the district allegedly did not bother to initiate any inquiry into the alleged anomalies even after being asked to do so by the Commissioner of Food and Civil Supply.

Bhupen Sarma, the Karimganj Deputy Commissioner, however, refused to say anything in this regard when asked about the alleged anomalies by this reporter.source: assam tribune
