CPI-M firm to contest Silchar seat

SILCHAR, Feb 26: “CPM is firm to contest from Silchar seat in the coming LS polls. There can be no ambiguity about it ” stated prominent party leader of Barak Valley Deepak Bhattacharjee while talking to The Sentinel.

When his attention was drawn to the statement of AUDF supremo Badaruddin Ajmal during his press-briefing recently that he would contest on Silchar seat also, besides Dhubri, he quipped, “this is against the spirit of alliance” and reminded the alliance comprises AUDF, CPI, CPM and SP. He added to say no decision has been yet taken at the state level coordination committee of the four party alliance.

Bhattacharjee was rather surprised how AUDF supremo could be assertive about his decision to contest from Silchar before any definite decision by the alliance was taken on the crucial issue. His decision to contest from Dhubri “is not being questioned by any alliance partner”, he clarified.

He being the AUDF supremo, could not give him the right to ride roughshod over the common consensus of the alliance. “It amounts to self-proclamation”, he pointed out. In such a situation, there could be no adjustment with AUDF, he further said. “Discussion at the state level is still on which warrants each of the alliance partner to desist from making any statement without arriving at mutually agreed final resolution”, Bhattacharjee stated.

AUDF’s win in three assembly segments of Hailakandi, Katigorah and Badarpur could also be no criterion to leave Silchar seat for Badaruddin Ajmal. He also took umbrage at the fact that CPM “does not have that base or strength in Silchar Parliamentary constituency”. He reminded it was from Silchar that their prominent leader Nurul Huda had won in the seventies and in subsequent electoral battles, he had been close in race with the formidable Congress and BJP candidates, Sontosh Mohan Dev and Kabindra Purkayastha.

As Nurul Huda has since shifted his base of organizational work to the national capital, questions are being raised about the name of candidate of the party for this seat. In political circles, the name of Deepak Bhattacharjee is making rounds. He however denied to say after the decision “is taken at the state level of the party, the final nod will come from the Politbureau in Delhi”. The firm decision of CPM to field candidate would put the alliance in jeopardy if Badaruddin Ajmal has his own way.

Bhattacharjee is however confident AUDF would understand the reality of situation and be “accommodative” to keep the alliance functional for the sake of evolving effective alternative to both UPA and NDA. CPM has been campaigning and fighting for national issues and raising them in the Parliament in the interest of common people. He questioned the role of AUDF in this regard. “AUDF is obsessed with regional issues and has no say on national matters”, CPM leader pointed out. CPI and SP are yet to come out with their reactions on the decision of Badaruddin Ajmal to be a candidate from Silchar.

In the event of AUDF and CPM fielding their candidates from here, analysts foresee significant change in political equation and upset the calculated move of both Congress and BJP in regard to their captive and traditional vote-banks. the sentinel
