SILCHAR, March 3: In a most unexpected development, the United Council of Muslim and Backward Communities of Barak Valley (UCMBCBV) has demanded through a resolution adopted at its emergent meeting to nominate External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee for Silchar Parliamentary Constituency in place of Sontosh Mohan Dev.
The Council justifies the demand on the ground that while Dev has failed to look after the development of Barak Valley as a whole, his wife Bithika Dev as MLA and Chairperson of Silchar Municipal Board has also been a dismal administrator and peoples’ representative.
The Council president Muzibur Rahman Barbhuiya pointed out at a press-briefing in the premises of their office that the removal of Bithika Dev as an administrator of SMB by an order of the High Court will definitely affect and influence public opinion which according to him would go against the Congress.
He at the same time made the prediction that Muslim masses and rural people in general would vote against Sontosh Mohan Dev.
The large scale corruption in the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes and projects will have its impact on the poll prospect of Dev.
He also brought in the construction of Silchar-Lumding BG and Silchar-Saurashtra Mahasadak which remained incomplete and stagnated due to the utter failure of Dev. The Muslim and backward classes are deprived of employment.
Even in the matter of employment in Assam University, Panchgram Paper Mill and in other central establishments, they are not only discriminated against but also deprived.
The Council has pleaded for extending nomination to Pranab Mukherjee for his secular and democratic credentials in a memorandum sent to Party High Command Sonia Gandhi. The Sentinel
