Our Staff Reporter
Silchar, March 3: In a tragic incident, Kapeete Alex, a Ugandan footballer representing the George Telegraph team, died of a massive cardiac attack yesterday night. Alex who was found in a critical condition with severe breathing problem, was rushed to the Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH), but was declared ‘brought dead’ by doctors. Alex scored a goal yesterday against Lajong Football Club in the on-going Second Division National Soccer Tournament, but his team lost the game.

The footballer, 24, was reportedly disappointed as he missed a couple of goals in the match. Francis, the Nigerian teammate of Alex who shared room No-206 of JC International Hotel adjacent to the SM Dev Memorial Stadium, said Alex did not eat anything in the night. At around 2.15 am, Francis woke up and noticed Alex suffering from acute breathing problem. Francis immediately called coach Raghu Nandi and local manager Atanu Chowdhury. Babul Hore, Silchar DSA secretary was also summoned. The footballer was then taken to SMCH, but it was too late. Doctors declared him brought dead.

The news of the tragic death of a foreign player has virtually cast a shadow of gloom over the other participating teams. However, Anirban Dutta, manager of George Telegraph hinted that the team would not withdraw midway from the tournament. Meanwhile, a case has been registered in the Ghoongur police station. The secretary of the Assam Football Association Ankur Dutta said that they have already contacted the Embassy of Uganda and the body of Alex would be flown back to Kolkata tomorrow.

Police sources said that a postmortem has already been done. The Assam Football Association and DSA Silchar held a condolence meeting in the DSA premises in the evening.
The schedule match between OILFC and Bengal Mumbai was also postponed today and will be held on March 4. THE SENTINEL
