The meeting also discussed the programme of different cells. The officials and teachers to be deputed on poll duty would be provided necessary training. The issue of transportation to reach the polling stations across the district was reviewed. Besides, it was decided to erase the grafitti or wall writings and to deploy maximum sector officers.

N Ghose, DRDA project director has been entrusted with EVC, postal ballot and ballot papers while ADC DR Bora will take charge of video-graphy cell. Lakhipur: Normalcy limping back
SILCHAR, March 8: Lakhipur sub-divisional town, 45 km form here, which turned volatile on Saturday due to police-public confrontation over the issue of arrest of the criminals behind the murder of Binata Sharma, college student, is limping back to normalcy, according to civil and police sources.
Hari Charan Bhagat BDO of Banskandi has been entrusted with the responsibility of looking after law and order. 147 Bn CRPF is patrolling the streets of the town, maintaining round the clock vigilance. In the meantime, under public pressure police has taken into custody Amarjit Singh and Ramen Sharma on the ground of their being involved in the murder of Binata Sharma. Following ransacking of the police station by a strong mob of rallyists who were staging protest under the banner of six different organizations, police first had to baton charge and then fire in the air, besides lobbing tear-gas shells, in order to disperse them. In order to control the rampaging mob, CRPF had to be requisitioned to maintain law and order.
Opposition parties-BJP and AGP-have in separate statements condemned strongly the action of police and CRPF for their indiscriminate lathi charge on people in which around 40 persons were injured. The opposition has demanded proper investigation and trial of the criminals. Ajit Bhattacharjee and Reena Singh, BJP leaders, and Chouba Mia, general secretary of the AGP Lakhipur town committee, has cautioned if the sub-divisional administration fails to book the assailants, they would be forced to launch vigorous agitation.
They have also accused the sub-divisional administration of its abject failure to provide security to common people. They reminded the matters of murder of Suparna Das and Babul Roy of Lakhipur in the recent past, the police has till date failed to bring to book the criminals behind the twin murders.
The murder of Binata Sharma from all reckoning will be an election issue for the opposition. Dinesh Prasad Goala, minister of urban development, who has been winning from this Lakhipur constituency since 1980, has become butt of severe public criticism for his failure to send either his nominee or representative to the town in this critical moment. source: the sentinel
International Women’s Day observed
SILCHAR, March 8: International Women’s Day was observed today by Human Rights Organization of Cachar in the auditorium of Axom Xahitya Xabha under the presidentship of Irabat Singh. Prominent personalities who graced the occasion included Dr Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Sanchita Ganguli, Chabi Gupta and Nandita Dutta Roy. Speaking as Chief Guest, Dr Bhattacharjee brought out the significance of the day and the important role now being played by women in different walks of life. He said, he was inspired by the ideals of his mother which shaped his body and mind to reach the pinnacle of success.
Sanchita Ganguli pointed out every year the day is celebrated in honour of women in order to project their stories of success and failures. The success of women in the field of education is worth mentioning. They are also subjected to various ills prevailing in society and needs care and protection. Chabi Gupta in her own way said motherhood is the most beautiful part of a woman. It is from her that people learn all about love, affection, patience, tolerance and service.
Bithika Acharya said a woman is successful and her life meaningful when she with her motherhood and qualities guides the family and the society on the path of virtue and value. Dr Bijoy Lakhi Das was of the opinion that celebrating the day would serve no purpose unless the message reaches the society to raise voice together against the abuses now being perpetrated on women.
