SIVASAGAR, May 16: Union Minister and sitting MP from Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency BK Handique got a good share of votes in the six Legislative Assembly constituencies of Sivasagar district.
The six constituencies of the district played a major role in his sixth consecutive win from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency. Out of the 10 LAC’s in Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, Sivasagar district has six and the rest fall under Jorhat district.
Putting to rest all speculation, Handique got a majority of the votes in the three legislative assembly constituencies of Thowra, Sivasagar and Amguri put together in Sivasagar election district of the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency.
Handique polled 91,515 votes in the three constituencies against 71,795 votes polled by his nearest rival and BJP candidate Kamakhya Prasad Tasa. Dhrupad Borgohain of CPI-M could manage only 28,462 votes in the three LAC’s.
Handique got 39,739 votes in Sivasagar LAC, a clear majority against only 23,982 votes polled by the BJP candidate whereas, Dhrupad Borgohain polled only 12,700 votes in the constituency. In Thowra LAC, Handique got 25,321 votes against 20,004 votes polled by the BJP candidate whereas Dhrupad Borgohain managed only 10,390 votes in the constituency.
However, the BJP candidate, riding on a mass support base of the AGP in Amguri LAC, which is represented by Pradip Hazarika of the AGP, got the majority of votes in the constituency.
The BJP candidate polled with 27,809 votes against 26,455 votes polled by the Congress candidate. CPI-M candidate Dhrupad Borgohain polled with only 5,372 votes in the constituency.
Contrary to expectations, the CPI-M candidate Dhrupad Borgohain could not manage to give any fight to the Congress candidate. He could only manage half of the total votes polled in Nazira LAC, which he represents in the State assembly.
Meanwhile, sources said that the Congress has secured a convincing majority in Nazira, Sonari and Mahmora LAC’s of Sivasagar district.
The overall performance of the Congress candidate in the district was widely celebrated in different parts of the district. Jubilant Congress workers brought out processions and bike rallies in different parts of the district to celebrate the victory of the Congress candidate.
A jubilant Handique, speaking to The Sentinel after his convincing win from the Jorhat Lok Sabha elections said that the mandate of the people is for all round development of the constituency during his previous terms. “Congress workers of the district have played a major role in my win”, Handique said.
