GUWAHATI, May 16: A raging controversy over his citizenship credentials and CBI investigations into them revealing startling anomalies triggered the ouster of controversial lottery baron and sitting MP Mani Kumar Subba from the prestigious Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency of Asom.
Daunted by the charges and the ongoing case in the apex court against Subba, the electorate of the State’s cultural capital voted in favour of AGP nominee Joseph Toppo, who routed Subba by a margin of over 33,000 votes.Subba’s defeat came as an embarrassment to the Congress, which, despite the raging charges against Subba, nominated him. Subba, who held the Tezpur seat since 1998, faces charges of fleeing from Nepal to escape prosecution in a murder case.
He is also charged with faking certificates to prove himself as an Indian citizen, with CBI investigating the case and the inquiry so far throwing up startling revelations regarding false certificates produced by the MP.
The CBI had unearthed multiple birth certificates of Subba during the course of its investigations, with the MP himself furnishing different sets while filing nomination for the previous Lok Sabha polls.
Subba had, in fact, furnished a different birth certificate while filing nomination for the 12th and 14th Lok Sabha; and again made changes in his date of birth while filing papers for the new House.
The CBI was investigating the nationality of Subba after one Birendra Nath Singh had filed a PIL in 2005, claiming that Subba had fled to India to escape prosecution in a murder case in Nepal in the 1970s.
All investigations so far have found gross inconsistencies and fraudulently acquired certificates, including from nonexistent places and schools.Subba had also survived demands for his dismissal from the Lok Sabha during the last term when the CBI’s findings were first revealed. THE SENTINEL
