Rahul Roy dares Cachar police to meet Malini Beel people

SILCHAR, May 4: Algapur MLA Rahul Roy, son of minister Gautam Roy, today virtually gave Silchar police a run as he proceeded with thousands of his followers towards Malini Beel, the slum area which had become a news headline for last one week, as the SC community people of the area made a dare devil attack on the residence of district Congress general secretary Partha Ranjan Chakraborty.

Understanding that Roy would address the Malini Beel slum dwellers today, thousands of SC community people of fishermen, commonly known as Kaibartya, from various parts of the valley proceeded towards the meeting place. Silchar police stopped them at various entry points resulting in much hue and cry. A police source clarified that since the district administration had already declared 144 CrPC and barred any public meeting on the Malini Beel issue till the magistrate level enquiry was over, they stopped the people from entering into the area.

Rahul Roy, meanwhile, discussed the matter with the people at Srikona point and asked them not to accompany him as it would violate the administrative measure. He however proceeded towards Malini Beel but was stopped by police at Chirokandi point. After a brief altercation with the police, Rahul was allowed to enter into the Malini Beel area.

Later, addressing the SC community people of the slum, Rahul said once the election result was declared and Code of Conduct was lifted he would launch a mass agitation in support of the Kaibartyas. He said he would take a team of representatives of the community to Dispur for discussion with the Chief Minsiter.

Talking to The Sentinel, the young MLA condemned the attack on Partha Ranjan, a close confidante of Union Minister Sontosh Mohan Dev and simultaneously maintained that the allegation made by the slum dwellers against Partha Ranjan should also be probed into. He said year after year, these Kaibartyas were deprived of their legitimate right of acquiring patta land on which they had been staying for long times.

To justify his stand, Rahul said the SC community people of his home district Hailakandi had appealed to him to extend a hand of co-operation to the people of Malini Beel in their hour of despair. Rahul said he would not tolerate any police excess on the poor slum dwellers. He further said that he had brought some relief for the Malini Beel people who could not come out from the area for earning their livelihood fearing atrocities by police as well as followers of Partha Ranjan, but police did not allow him to distribute the relief on the ground that code of conduct was still in operation. Rahul later said the relief would be distributed by some NGOs. Meanwhile a police officer said since public meetings in Malini Beel area was not possible following the administration’s decision, they stopped the people from entering into the area. The Algapur MLA was also stopped on the same ground. THE SENTINEL
