
SILCHAR, May 4: The incident of mob violence on the house of district Congress General Secretary Partha Ranjan Chakraborty got a new-twist State’s Excise Minister Gautam Roy had assured a group of scheduled caste people led by former MP Nepal Chandra Das that he would not tolerate any torture or police atrocities on the people of Malini Beel, who were accused of attacking the house of Chakraborty, a close confidante of Union Minister Sontosh Mohan Dev, with whom Roy’s enmity was an secret in the ruling party.
Meanwhile, SC community people from various parts of Barak Valley yesterday assembled at Tapobannagar area of Silchar where a decision had been taken to convene a grand rally on May 31 to discuss the wretched plight of the community. A 100-member committee had also been formed. Later a team led by Das met Roy who had assured them of all kind of co-operation.
BJP, on the other hand, had hinted that they might extend support if the Malini Beel people call for bandh. The opposition party had also demanded arrest of Partha Ranjan and his brother who had allegedly tortured the SC community people of Malini Beel. THE SENTINEL
Suspected PULF militant held
SILCHAR, May 4: Acting on a tip off, Army’s Field Regiment apprehended a suspected PULF militant from Tupirbond area of Ramnagar under Sonai on Sunday. The Army recovered a gun, detonator weighing 100 gms, one jilctine stick and some fuse wire from the suspected militant, identified as Nazrul Haque Laskar (38).
After preliminary interrogation, the Army handed him over to Sonai PS yesterday night. Meanwhile, Nazrul’s wife Habijulnesa and his brother Ainul Haque Laskar claimed that Nazrul was innocent and he had been made a scapegoat. They further claimed that Army jawans did not recover any firearms or objectionable items from their house.
But unidentified persons in plain dress accompanying the jawans claimed to have recovered a bag containing the firearms from a nearby bush. Aminul Haque said, somebody had kept the bag in the bush and then informed the police to settle some petty score with Nazrul who had allegedly been associated with a racket dealing in drugs.
