SILCHAR, April 20: From Congress to AUDF, from BJP to CPI-M, all the main political parties in Silchar had one thing in common; they were all satisfied at the role of the administration in conducting the election smoothly, praised Returning Officer Gautam Ganguly. But, AUDF has raised doubt over the security of the strong room at the inter-state bus terminus at Ramnagar.
Baddaruddin Ajmal’s party has sensed that the Congress would do its level best to manipulate the EVMs. Dr Baharul Islam of the AUDF had already faxed a memorandum to the Election Commissioner of India demanding additional para-military forces at the ISBT. He however had expressed similar apprehension about Karimganj constituency also.
Dr Islam in his letter to the ECI had stated that both Sontosh Mohan Dev and Gautam Roy were masters of manipulation and hence they could do anything for victory. Islam admitted that they could not rely on Assam Police and local administration, particularly some bureaucrats. He strongly demanded immediate deployment of additional para-military forces. Dr Islam however admitted that the district administration in both constituencies played a neutral role on the day of the election.
Similar tone of appreciation about the role of administration in Cachar district, found its echo in the saffron brigade too. Kunal Purkayastha, son of BJP candidate Kabindra Purkayastha unhesitatingly admitted that the district administration has through out maintained a transport role. Central observers were also very strict but did not eross the limit, Purkayastha added.
CPI-M leader Dulal Mitra categorically said that they had no allegation against the district administration in Cachar. Mitra further added that strong-room at ISBT was properly guarded and the apprehension of manipulation lacked autocratic basis.
The ruling party also happy at the role of administration District Congress general secretary (administration) Arun Dutta Majumdar said the ruling party had no objection against the administration as the Returning Officer maintained a transparent and neutral role. Majumdar further added that the apprehension of manipulation at the ISBT was a non-sense exaggeration on by some frustrated people.
Meanwhile, Returning Officer Gautam Ganguly firmly maintained that nobody could enter the strong-room. The CRPF had been monitoring the vigilance with utmost strictness. “Even I myself can’t enter into the strong-room”, Ganguly confided. THE SENTINEL
