SILCHAR, April 20: Cachar police has not yet been able to arrest Doloo Tea Estate director Hasmukh R Patel who is charged of not depositing the PF share of garden labourers for a period of eight years from 2000 to 2007. The Provident Fund assistant commissioner has lodged an FIR against Patel recently and since then he has been absconding.
The Police yesterday picked up garden manager BS Mishra but it was found that Mishra had joined in January 2009 only. A police source said that the garden manager was released after a brief interrogation since he was not in the picture when the offence was done.
Borkhola PS OC DK Paul had reportedly said that Patel was mainly instrumental in the scamp as 12 per cent from the salary of the labourers were deducted for PF but Patel did not deposit the same accordingly. A source in the Assam Tea Plantation Provident Fund said that the Doloo Tea Estate authority had repeatedly been pursued by them to release their share of PF but the garden management did not respond. The total amount would be Rs 3 crore.
Indicating this, a ATPPF source said since it was a criminal offence, a case against Patel has been lodged under IPC 406,408 and 409. A police source said a non-bailable warrant has also been issued against Hasmukh.
Meanwhile a different angle in the entire episode could be ascertained from certain facts. ATPPF had lodged the complain against Hashmukh some time back, but police did not react immediately. A source indicated that Hashmukh used to have the blessing of a powerful political lobby, but in recent times, the past relation between them started to sour as the former failed to pay the money he used to.
A number of tea estates in Barak Valley had defaulted in depositing their respective PF shares but no step has been taken against them as the garden management used to maintain cordial relations with the political lobby. Another source said that the financial condition of Doloo Tea Estate had deteriorated miserably in the recent times. THE SENTINEL
