GUWAHATI, April 9 – With a 27-run first innings lead and four wicket in hand the NF Railway Sports Association is all set to regain the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy.
On the third day of the four-day final of the Elite Division Senior Inter District Cricket Tournament at the Nehru Stadium here today, in reply to Silchar’s first innings total of 202 all out the railway men were 229 for six when the play was stopped after 67.3 overs for bad light.
Utpal Medhi (66) and Mrigen Talukdar (2) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day. For NF Railway, apart from Utpal, Sarupam Purkayastha was the other batsman to hit a half-century while Parag Das contributed 43. Railway had a poor start after dismissing the opponents who could add just three runs to their overnight total of 199 for nine.
The former champions lost their opener Pritam Debnath at team’s total of five. But a 70-run partnership for the second wicket between Parag and Krishanu Mazumder consolidated their position. Later the most useful partnership was built between Sarupam and Utpal who contributed 122 runs for the sixth wicket.
The Silchar bowlers had been able to contain the Railway middle order with some decent bowling. But as Sarupam and Utpal got their act together they were punished all round the wicket. Utpal faced 100 balls in his 135-minute innings while Sarupam stayed at the crease for 147 minutes and faced 103 deliveries.
Left arm spinner Prakash Bhagat came out with a four-wicket haul while Arindom Chakraborty and Raju Das took one wicket each.
