SILCHAR, May 14: Security arrangement at Silchar’s Ramnagar ISBT and ISTT, where 1,049 EVMs, were kept, was by and large satisfactory, stated AUDF MLA as well as general secretary Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya. In a statement, Mazarbhuiya along with party’s district general secretary Altaf Hussain Mazumdar and party youth wing president Shaminul Haque Barbhuiya said the district administration had arranged full-proof security for the strong-room at ISBT and ISTT.
Earlier, working president Hafiz Rashid Chowdhury, who came to Silchar for a one night stay to review the pre-counting situation virtually certified the Cachar administrations work as satisfactory while talking to The Sentinel.
Anil Dey, chief election agent of BJP candidate Kabindra Purkayastha in a recent fax message to the Election Commission cautioned that militants might blow up the ISBT strong-room so that fresh election could be conducted. However, Dey categorically admitted that security, as arranged by the Cachar district administration, was satisfactory.
The ruling Congress party had till now raised no eyebrows about the security arrangement. In this backdrop, district administration’s announcement that a group was contemplating sabotage on the day of the counting and administration might book some persons for spreading rumours under National Security Act, assumed much significance. Returning officer as well as the Deputy Commissioner Gautam Ganguly maintained that they had identified at least 20 persons who were hatching a ploy to create law and order situation, and in their design, spreading of rumours stood as a major element.
Ganguly did not elaborate much, only cautioned that the administration would book the conspirators under NSA. But who were those conspirators? Ganguly, as expected, maintained a bureaucratic silence. However a police source linked the entire design with the apprehension raised by Dey about the possible militant attack on the strong-room. The source said police and intelligence were seriously examining the apprehension of militant attack as expressed by the election agent of the BJP candidate. Was it a near pressure tactic on the administration? Or was it a well-knit ploy to create an environment of confusion over the transparency of the administration? If Dey had some authentic information, he should have shared the same with the police and administration so that proper step could be taken in advance. But Dey instead sent the copies of the message to the local press. Why a senior advocate like Dey did so, police wondered.
Sources said police had some information that son of a heavy weight leader in Silchar was instrumental in spreading the rumours of militant attacks on the strong-room. He had allegedly made contacts with some persons who did not have very good credential.
It is to be noted that Silchar police had identified 256 persons as ‘bad characters’ prior to the April 16 election. Those persons were under constant police vigil. And the election passed off peacefully. THE SENTINEL
