Tarun Gogoi apprehensive of BJP wresting Silchar seat

Silchar Lok Sabha Election
GUWAHATI, May 13: Two days before the declaration of the Lok Sabha poll results, Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today gave enough hints that the BJP might wrest the Silchar seat where Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev is the Congress candidate. The Chief Minister further said the Congress is evenly poised with its rival candidates in Dhubri and Lakhimpur seats, while Guwahati and Mangaldai seats will witness a tough fight.

Other candidates of the Silchar seat are AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, BJP leader Kabindra Purkayastha and CPI-M leader Dipak Bhattacharjee.

Talking to newsmen here today, Gogoi said that the AGP, BJP and the AUDF, as opposition parties on a common platform, should have been able to win all the 14 seats in Asom, but they cannot. “They themselves do not claim of winning all the 14 seats, but according to my calculation, the Congress will not get less than eight seats. After the poll results, the AGP will be the biggest loser as it has lost its own identity by forging an alliance with the BJP,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi also gave a hint that after the Lok Sabha poll results, the party will review the work done by State ministers for the party in the Lok Sabha polls. “When there is a straight contest, a candidate has to get more votes to win, but in triangular and four-cornered contests, a candidate may win by even polling less votes. All these aspects will be taken into consideration while ascertaining performances of ministers,” he added. THE SENTINEL
