Preparation on for civic polls in Hailakandi

HAILAKANDI, July 24 – The district administration of Hailakandi has taken all measures to hold the civic polls for Hailakandi Municipality Board and Lala Town Committee on July 31.

The Deputy Commissioner of Hilakandi, Tapan Chandra Goswami said that the preparations are in full swing in Hailakandi for the polls and the officials have already been appointed for the purpose.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Debashis Chakraborty, who is in-charge of the civic poll in Hailakandi, said that the Hailakandi Municipal Board has 16 wards and the Lala Town Committee has 10 wards this time. Both have been reorganised in Hailakandi district and due to this the number of wards in Hailakandi has increased up to 16 from the earlier 10 while Lala wards has also increased up to 10 from the earlier 4. The post of the chairman in Lala Town Committee has been reserved for Scheduled Caste woman but in Hailakandi no reservation has been made.

This time there are 146 candidates in the fray for both bodies. In Hailakandi, there are 103 candidates in the fray for the 16 wards while in Lala, there are 43 candidates in the fray for the 10 wards. Total number of town voters is 33,822. Of them, 25,577 voters are in Hailakandi and 8245 are in Lala. The total polling booths are 40. Of them, 28 are in Hailakandi and 12 in Lala. For conducting the polls, a total of 160 polling officials are required, while there will be 30 sector officers for the polls.

The Deputy Commissioner, Goswami has appealed to the people of both Hailakandi and Lala to exercise their franchise freely.

On the otherhand, all the political parties have started hectic campaign to woo the voters and mainly concentrating on the door to door campaigns. The Excise and Border Areas Development Minister, Gautam Roy said that to avoid controversy, the DCC-I has decided not to field any candidate. In Hailakandi, the Congress supported candidates are contesting as Independent candidate. The BJP-AGP alliance has fielded candidates in all the wards.
