Aging and fragile Sadarghat cries for concrete renovation

SILCHAR, Aug 7: The eastward gateway to Silchar is the Sadarghat bridge that connects the south Asom town to the Kumbhirgram Airport. The bridge is also an approach route and transit point between Manipur and south Assam. It has no alternative at present. This important and aging bridge is fragile due to lack of proper renovations. Reeling under neglect, the plight of the bridge is pathetic. The political parties of Barak Valley have been playing the role of mute spectators without doing anything worthwhile for the renovation of the bridge.

The technical life span of the bridge that was built in 1967 was 100 years. Experts believe that the life span of the bridge might have been calculated based on the limited number vehicles that plied over it in those days, but with the increase in number of vehicles plying over it manifold now, the condition of the bridge is pathetic.

In the 300-metre stretch of the bridge some holes appeared recently. People are apprehensive of accidents because of the pot holes in the bridge. There are complaints from public that the bridge has been in a pathetic plight for years together without any repairing. What is done in the name of renovation is some patch works by the department concerned. In addition, a wooden flyover has been constructed on the cantilever trips in the middle of the bridge by replacing the concrete structure that got loose in the middle from the cemented mass.

According to the local people, loaded trucks do much damage to the bridge whenever the ‘no-entry’ is relaxed.

Conscious circles in the town are of the opinion that traffic must be controlled at the entry points of the bridge to ensure that two or more loaded trucks cannot go simultaneously over the bridge. This measure can also avert many accidents. THE SENTINEL
