Signature drive for SMB chief post rocks Silchar Congress

SILCHAR, Aug 7: District Yuva Congress president Rajesh Deb and NSUI district president Mehboob Alom, two close confidantes of former Union minister Sontosh Mohan Dev, have reportedly started collecting signatures of newly-elected ward commissioners in support of Dev’s daughter Susmita who is being projected as SMB chief. Sources said the duo have already collected signatures of 13 ward commissioners out of the 16 ward commissioners. Sources said another confidante of Dev, Roy has also started collecting similar signatures.

Opposing the move, at least five ward commissioners have brought the matter to the notice of APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita. Admitting the development, State Congress spokesman Pradip Dutta Roy told The Sentinel that Kalita instructed the district unit to issue a circular to all the party ward commissioners to avoid such exercises as they were against organizational norms.

Kalita stated that the elected commissioners would choose their leader and if more than one names crop up then the district committee would prepare a panel and send it to the State committee for approval.

Sources said Susmita’s chance for being chosen as the SMB chairperson was almost final as majority of the newly-elected ward commissioners are close to Dev. Moreover, Sudip Dutta, a veteran as well as the vice-chairman of the previous Board who was promoted by Goala, was defeated in the civic polls.

Quoting APCC guidelines, Dutta Roy said signature collection before the issuance of the gazette notification was against party norms. District president Karnendu Bhattacharjee reportedly expressed resentment over the development and asked all the newly elected ward commissioners to desist from such exercises. THE SENTINEL
