SILCHAR, Aug 7: The BJP in Silchar received a major jolt in the recently held Municipality election as it could win only seven of the 16 seats in the Silchar Municipality Board. BJP tasted success in the last general election, which was held on April 16 last, defeating Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev in gaining the Silchar Lok Sabha seat. But, the BJP lost the battle to Congress in the civic polls held recently just after three-and-a-half months of the Lok Sabha elections.
Sources said the BJP district committee organized a review meeting after the results of the municipality election were declared. Although the committee could not officially discuss its failure in the civic polls as it was not in the agenda, yet a lobby voiced its resentment against the election management by MP Kabindra Purkayastha.
Earlier, BJP MLA Rumi Nath told mediapersons that the leaders entrusted with the task of management in the municipality elections have utterly failed to live up to the expectations. District president Uday Shankar Goswami reportedly said: “The sudden death of Bimalangshu Roy and Ramapada Das is shocking for the party, and it will take some time for revival.”
Sources said an anti-Purkayastha lobby alleged that the newly-elected MP neglected local leaders to highlight his own son, Kanad Purkayastha. They alleged that Kanad was practically the overall charge of the municipality elections and was instrumental in selecting candidates as well as drawing campaign strategies. THE SENTINEL
