SILCHAR, Aug 6: Corruption by contractors is rampant in Lakhipur subdivision where funds are being siphoned off in the name of construction of street bridges, hospitals, school buildings and the like. Though the Opposition BJP and AGP sometimes protest such corruption, their voice is not that loud.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Shadak Yojana (PMGSY), a road was extended up to three km within Tarapur Garden from the National Highway in the area in 2008.
However, the condition of the road was pathetic within three months of its construction due to use of very low quality materials in its construction by the contractor concerned. Bitumen and stones that were used in metalling the road have already come out exposing the skeletal structure of the road. No action has been taken against the contractor as yet by the department concerned.
Ahead of the particular connecting road, there lies another street in the south-west side in the area. The street was constructed with funds sanctioned under the PMGSY, but the black topping of the road is yet to be done.
Now questions are being raised on the quality of materials used in the road now under construction also. It is an open secret among the local people that the contractors are hand in gloves with politicians, and that affects development works. THE SENTINEL
