SILCHAR, Aug 6: Congress ward Commissioner Ranjit Roy said he is the most deserving candidate for the post of chaiperson of the Silchar Municipality Board while talking to this correspondent of The Sentinel keeping aside the viewpoint of Susmita Dev’s chances of becoming the next chairperson.
Roy said he has been in the municipality since 1979. “I have worked under Sontosh Mohan Dev and Bithika Dev as ward commissioner and therefore I am the most experienced among the 16 elected Congress candidates now,” maintained Roy.
Roy also said he would approach SM Dev, Dinesh Prasad Goala, district Congress president Karnendu Bhattacharjee, two party MLAs Bithika Dev and Kutub Ahmed and Parliamentary Secretary Ajit Singh for the purpose. “I will ask them on what grounds am I not fit for the post” said Roy. He further said that he would personally talk with the elected party ward commissioners and seek their support. “However, if Susmita is unanimously chosen, I will definitely accept the decision,” Roy assured.
Meanwhile, sources said that Susmita would be the unanimous choice for the top post. In a felicitation ceremony held for the elected party members in a hotel, Bhattacharjee advised the ward commissioners to elect their leaders all by themselves.
But, Bhattacharjee said, in case of any competition the core committee of the district unit would intervene and would take the decision which would be sent to the APCC for its final approval. The core committee comprises SM Dev, DP Goala, Karnendu Bhattacharjee, Ajit Singh, Bithika Dev, Misbahul Islam Laskar, Kutub Ahmed and Arun Dutta Majumder. Among them, only Goala could veto against Susmita.
Goala told The Sentinel that he had no personal choice and the elected ward commissioners would choose their leaders. Meanwhile, another source said that Ranjit Roy had raised his voice for the top post but in reality, he is eyeing for the post of the vice-chairman as he is also in favour of Susmita. THE SENTINEL
