SILCHAR, Aug 8: Kanad Purkayastha, son of BJP MP Kabindra Purkayastha, found himself amid much fury of party workers after the debacle in the civic body polls in which the party could win only seven out of the 28 wards.
The party meeting to discuss the outgoing membership drive eventually turned out to be a pandemonium as a group of district leaders directly targeted Kanad alleging that he had collected money from various sources in the name of raising funds for the Municipality elections. Kanad reportedly admitted that he had collected Rs 1 lakh, but failed to explain the expenditure.
The district committee had formed a committee for raising funds for the election. The committee comprised district committee treasurer Bimalendu Roy, Rupam Saha and Kaushik Rai. At the meeting, Rai reportedly alleged whomever they approached for donation, they were told that Kanad had already collected money from them. Rai had reportedly challenged Kanad’s authority to convene a press meet without consulting the district committee.
Sources said much heat will be generated in the next meeting which will be attended by Kabindra Purkayastha, after he returns from Delhi on August 12. Purkayastha was made the Pravari, in-charge for the civic body polls by the State committee, and party MLA Dr Rumi Nath was his deputy. Purkayastha said as he was busy with the Parliament session, he entrusted the charge with his son, and this angered a group of party leaders.
Meanwhile, a source said that the new district body would be formed within a few months. THE SENTINEL
