No proposal to divert Brahmaputra by China: Centre

NEW DELHI, Aug 8: Union Minister of State Preneet Kaur in reply to a question raised by BJP MP Balbir Punj in the Rajya Sabha recently said the Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied proposing to divert the Brahamaputra river.

She said: “The Centre has seen media reports which say that China had proposed to divert the Brahmaputra river. But the Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied any such reports.” She also said the Centre is regularly monitoring the flow of the Brahmaputra. India and China have established an expert-level mechanism to discuss interaction and cooperation on all issues regarding trans-border rivers. The India-China expert level mechanism on trans-border rivers held three meetings in September 2007, April 2008 and April 2009. Regarding the road link issue, the Union minister said China has constructed a road linking Lhasa to Medog County in the Tibet Autonomous Region. According to the minister, “The Centre is giving careful and special attention to the development of infrastructure in the border areas opposite to China in order to meet our security requirements and also to facilitate the economic development of these areas.” THE SENTINEL
