Bishnupriya Manipuris threaten students’ unrest

SILCHAR, Sept 7: Members of different organizations as well as a large number of people of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Community under the banner of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Andolan Parishad staged a demonstration in front of the office of Cachar Deputy Commissioner of Cachar from 10.30 am to 2 pm today to express their strong resentment over the non-fulfilment of the long-standing demands of the community.

The demands include, allocation of separate code structure for Bishnupriya Manipuri communities in the list of OBCs, appointment of Bishnupriya Manipuri language teachers at primary schools where the language has already been introduced, appointment of Bishnupriya sub-inspector of schools, recommendation by the State Government to the Central Government for broadcasting of Bishnupriya Manipuri Programmes at Doordarshan and AIR centres of Guwahati and Silchar, grant of Bishnupriya Manipuri Development Council, Inclusion of Bishnupriya Manipuri Community in the proposed linguistic Minority Development Council of Assam, inclusion of Bishnupriya Manipuri representatives in the Assam Legislative Council, grant-in-aid for the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Parishad and Sanskriti Parishad for the development of literature and culture of the community etc. The Parishad threatened the State Government that if the demands remain unfulfilled, there is every possibility of students’ and youths’ unrest for which the government shall remain responsible.

The signatories of today’s memorandum on behalf of Bishnupriya Manipuri Andolan Parishad comprise president and secretary general of the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha respectively, president of the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, general secretary of the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha State committee, President of the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sanskritik Parishad and general secretary of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha.
