No politics in Sujan’s appointment: Gautam Roy

SILCHAR, Sept 7: “Appointment of Sujan Dutta as the Silchar Development Authority chairman has nothing to do with politics,” stated State Excise Minister Gautam Roy last night while inaugurating the concrete canopy of the Silchar Children Park as well as an open auditorium, named after his father late Santosh Kumar Roy.

Roy also said that he had no political ambition for Silchar and hence the appointment of Dutta, a close confidante of him, should not be misunderstood by the people as a political move. Roy, in a confident mood, claimed he can win from any Lok Sobha seat. He, however, elaborated that he had advised Sujan to review the road scenario of Silchar every week and to discuss the issue with officials concerned.

Roy had donated Rs 10 lakh for the construction of the concrete canopy and the open auditorium for the children’s park. Last night, he donated another Rs 2 lakh to install amusement items in the park.

Roy in his brief speech said since the programme involved children, nobody should smell politics in his gesture or utterances. But, Roy himself stirred controversy by alleging former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev as an obstacle for him when he had earlier filed for party nomination.

Interestingly, Bhattacharjee, whom Roy addressed as his ‘political guru’, was expelled from the Congress in 2006, and Roy had reportedly not done anything for the withdrawal of the expulsion. Bhattacharjee had recently applied for revocation of the suspension order.

Bhattacharjee, while giving a speech last night, appealed to Roy to concentrate more on Silchar. Others who spoke on the occasion included Rasaraj Das, Babul Hore, Nilotpal Choudhury, Deputy Commissioner Gautam Ganguly, Ashish Gupta, Badal Dey, Sujan Dutta, while Dr Rajib Kar conducted the entire programme. A cultural programme was also held later. THE SENTINEL
