Jorhat Durga Puja

Durga Puja in Jorhat, Assam

JORHAT
, Sept 16: The police and district administration have proposed various measures to avert anti-social activities during the pujas, here.

Besides the usual closed-circuit cameras and stepped up patrolling by security forces, the administration identified eight major puja mandaps for additional security.

The puja committees of the eight pandals including– JPR, Lakshmi Union, Rupahi Ali, Railway Station, Thana Road and Town Junction have been asked to raise volunteers.

In a community liaison group meeting with the police and puja committee members, the police proposed that the eight puja committees recruit trained volunteers including home guards and Civil Defence trainees which will be provided by the police.

The Superintendent of Police criticized the puja committees for not taking the measures seriously. To the proposal that the home guard be paid at least Rs 100 per day for four days, most of the committees had not responded enthusiastically.

“Where as the committees are willing spend lakh in decorations and other things, they cannot spare even Rs 4,000 for security, the SP said.

It was also suggested that the eight puja committees fit closed circuit TVs near the pandals.
There will be 58 pujas held in the district this year. THE SENTINEL
