Congress district committee demands new list of flood beneficiaries

KARIMGANJ, Nov 16: The Trinamool Congress Karimganj district committee submitted a memorandum to the special adviser to Chief Minister, CK Das, and to State Rural Development Department additional commissioner Sumeeth Jarath alleging serious anomalies in the list of flood-hit victims during the 2007 flood. The Congress party alleged that the list of flood victims prepared by the Karimganj district administration was anomalous.

The list prepared by the Karimganj district administration showed an amount of Rs 6.50 crore as relief fund for flood-hit victims of 2007. But, the Trinamool Congress district committee demanded cancellation of the list and stated that the names listed were not the actual beneficiaries and that many irregularities were intact with it. The district committee alleged that the names of original flood victims were not listed and names of three to four people from the same family were enlisted.

Moreover, people living in pucca houses were included in the list and those living in mud houses were shown as partially affected. Also, names of some people were included in both the flood-hit and the cyclone-affected lists, the Congress party alleged.

The district committee of the Trinamool Congress, therefore, demanded a new list with the names of actual  beneficiaries or else it would resort to agitational programmes and hunger strike.

The memorandum was signed by Barak Upatyaka Trinamool Congress observer Nilotpal Das, Karimganj district president Dulal Chandra Paul, Karimganj district general secretary Kamalkanti Roy Choudhury and others. THE SENTINEL
