SILCHAR, Nov 20: The Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Silchar lies on the verge of closure owing to its depleting viewership due to lack of good performance. Since its inception, Silchar DDK has been reportedly mired in nepotism and favouritism. Controversies and reports of scams on commissioned programmes in Silchar DDK have ceased to leave it.
In this regard, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (media cell) member and secretary Pradip Dutta Roy sent a memorandum to Information and Broadcasting Minister, New Delhi, Ambica Soni outlining in brief the various problems of Silchar DDK and sought her intervention for a solution in order to make it worthy of existence. The matter was also taken up by former Union minister Sanatosh Mohan Dev, district Congress Committee president Karnendu Bhattacharjee and Cabinet Minister Gautom Roy to Delhi and to the Guwahati authorities but nothing has materialized so far, sources said. All the concerned people are now keeping their fingers crossed over Ambica Soni’s decision to give due and serious thought to the problem of Silchar DDK.
It was reported that Silchar DDK lacks, of all things, a director and a camera man to look after it and to shoot programmes. Also the weekly Bengali bulletin has become a mere capsule of stale happenings around the town. According to sources, viewership of Silchar DDK has declined even in rural areas as the daily programmes are being telecast repeatedly.
Looking at the state of affairs of Silchar DDK, the North East Region (NER) Doordarshan deputy director general said that the problem of camera person could be solved by utilizing the services of video assistants or a casual camera man from the Guwahati Kendra could be taken in on assignment basis.
Sources further said Silchar DDK’s failure to grab viewership is only because of acute shortage of technical staff, lack of direction, innovative ideas and most important, sincerity and seriousness on the part of those entrusted with the administration and programme management. THE SENTINEL

One Station Director of Silchar DDK, Mr. Pandit, took Rs.15,000/- bribe each from the applicants for Commissioned Programmes last time. He camped in a Guwahati Hotel and took Cash himself and Cheque/Draft in his wife's name. This was how he did it openly. Is there anybody to take action on him ? Where is our Anti-corruption departments ?? He is transferred from Silchar now. But he will continue his malpractice wherever he is. Who will stop him ???
