Dibru-Saikhowa Biggest Assamese National Park
Dibru Saikhova which is one of the biggest national parks, which is spread in an area of around 650 square km in Assam. It is situated about 515 kms away from Guwahati & 13 kms to the north of famous Tinsukia town and is surrounded by the Patkai & Dibruhills on the south and Arunachal hills & Brahmaputra River in the north. In 1986 it was declared a wildlife Sanctuary, by uniting two forest reserves Dibru and Saikhowa, and was elevated to the status of National Park in 1999 by the government of Assam.
Dibru Saikhowa is among the many famous biodiversity hotspots of this world. It consists of evergreen forest (semi wet), grasslands, deciduous forests (tropical moist), cane brakes & bamboo. It is located at 118 m above the sea level & in the flood plains of river Brahmaputra. Dibru-Saikhowa is considered to be a safe heaven for some of the endangered and extremely rare species of wild life which includes 300 avifauna species both migratory and endangered along with various species of shrubs, herbs and rare medical plants.
The primary motive for the formation of park was the conservation of White winged wood duck in its natural habitat; it became famous for its bright color horses which are known as Feral Horses. Some endangered and rare animals of this National park are tiger, capped langur, water buffalo, gangetic river dolphin, Hoolock gibbon, slow loris, elephant etc. some of the endangered birds are White bellied heron, Swamp francolin, pelican, pigeon (Pale capped), etc. & migratory birds such as goose (Bar-headed), Geyleg goose, Black stork, Brahmini duck etc.
To enter in the park permission is required. The two entry points for the tourist are Saikhowa ghat and Guijan Ghat which is 10km from Tinsukia. One can only enter after the sunrise and before sunset and night halts and picnicking is strictly not allowed. There are two villages Dhadia & Laika.
