Delhi clears Rs 1000cr power plant for Cachar

Silchar, July 26: Delhi has cleared a Rs 1,000-crore power project in Cachar district to mitigate the severe power crisis in south Assam. The 250MW thermal power plant will be set up in two phases of 125MW each.

This was revealed by Union heavy industries minister Sontosh Mohan Dev at a rally at Kalian in Cachar district yesterday. He said the people of the district would receive uninterrupted power supply once the plant goes on stream.

Dev told this correspondent here last night that officials of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and the Assam government had signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi yesterday.

Dev said his ministry had mooted the idea of the plant and he had taken the initiative to urge BHEL, PFC and the Assam government to invest in it.

The additional secretary in the Union heavy industries ministry, Surajit Mitra, said BHEL and PFC would each hold 50 per cent of the total equity of the plant in the initial stage.

Dispur will contribute by providing 960 bighas of land at Digarkhal village, 35km from here, in Kathigorah block on the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Mitra said the prom- oters have been asked to expedite the execution of the project.
The promoters are hoping that the first phase of the project will be completed within 15 months, he added. Construction will start this winter.

The plant’s feedstock, coal, will be transported to the site from Margherita and Lido in Upper Assam by special trains.

At present, Cachar has a natural gas-based thermal power generation facility that was set up at Banskandi in the late nineties by the Delhi-based company, DLF Power. It has the capacity to produce only 15.5MW of power.

The Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi have a total peak power demand of 82MW and a daily supply of 45MW to 50MW. The shortfall makes life quite excruciating in the Valley districts, particularly in summer. source: telegraph india
