Silchar Medical College

Silchar Medical College is considered as one of amongst the outstanding institutes offering medical education to the future doctors. Kabindra Purkayastha

Kabindra Purkayastha

Mr. Kabindra Purkayastha was born on December 15 1931 in the Karamkhal district, Sylhet which is now a part of Bangladesh. He completed his studies and obtained a Masters Degree in Arts from Gauhati University.  

He was earlier the union minister of India. He had also served as the minister of communication during the Atal Bihari government from the year 1998 to 1999. He is also the senior leader of Assam’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

He has achieved various milestones during his course of being one of the ministers of the Indian constituency. In 1991, he was first elected to Lok Sabha from the Silchar constituency. He was re-elected in the year 1998 to Lok Sabha from the same constituency as was in 1991. From the year 1995-2001, Kabindra Purkayastha was the Vice President, B.J.P from the state of Assam. In 1998, Kabindra Purkayastha was re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha and was also made the Union Minister of State, Communications.

In the year 2009, Kabindra Purkayastha was designated to the fifteenth Lok Sabha by giving a defeat to the strong contenders that included Indian National Congress’s Santosh Mohan Dev as well as Badruddin Ajmal who belonged to AUDF from the Silchar constituency.        

Other than achieving various positions, Kabindra Purkayastha is also a member of the various social organizations that are running with the aim of organizing the society.

He has visited various places within the country as well as abroad. Some of the countries which Kabindra Purkayastha has visited include China, America, France, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Switzerland, South Africa, Kenya and United Kingdom.

Barak valley is the situated in the southern part of Assam. This place is forenamed after the Barak river. Silchar is the main city of this valley. Barak Valley’s three sides are separated from the main state of Assam by the hills as well as with the Bangladesh’s international boundary.    

There are three major districts in Barak Valley namely Hailakandi, Cachar and Karimganj. In the Cachar district of Barak Valley, the majority of population is composed of Hindus which is 60% while Muslims enjoy the majority of population in Karimganj which is 53%.

Aside from the Sylheti Bengalis, the Barak Valley is also the home to Manipuris, Kacharis and Hmar. The inhabitant of the main city valley that is Silchar is ruled by the Bengalis and they are the ones who owe to the heavy penetration from Bangladesh which is the neighboring country. The influence of Bengalis in Barak Valley and its districts has reduced the number of originally residing inhabitants which can include Cacharis, Rongmei Nagas, Meiteis and Meitei Pangals.              

Barak valley is basically the lower Assam and is considered to be one of the most backward parts of the country economically.

Santosh Mohan Dev

Santosh Mohan Dev

Santosh Mohan Dev is the veteran Indian who has had hid firm hands in the political field. Born in Silchar, Assam on the 1st April 1934, Santosh Mohan Dev is the political leader and also one of the members of the Indian National Congress. Santosh Mohan Dev was first time elected in the Parliament in the year 1980. Including this, he has had seven terms as the Member of Parliament in the office.

Santosh Mohan Dev has represented the state of Assam in Silchar five times out of the seven terms that he has spent being the Member of Parliament. The remaining two times, he was elected from the state of Tripura.

He has been honored with various awards and other achievements during his political career. Santosh Mohan Dev was made the Union Cabinet’s Minister of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprise from 2005 till 2009. There are several other achievements by Santosh Mohan Dev that can be acknowledged. He was influential to set up a national university in the state of Assam (Silchar). Other than this, he has also played a major role in the freight equalization scheme during the early 1990s. It was meant for the asymmetrical charges of rail freight in the various states allover India thus he was the one to make it more competitive.

He is the third generation of his family to be called as the Congressman. Santosh Mohan Dev’s father was Independent India’s first legislators. Not only his father has a political career but his grand father was also one of the active members at the time of the struggle by the Indians for freedom. Besides Santosh Mohan Dev’s grand father was also the member of the first ever constituted Silchar Municipal Council in the year 1913. 

Other than the political field, Mr. Santosh Mohan Dev is also a professional and certified Football Referee. Not only football, he also had won the prizes for the All Assam Lawn Tennis Championship. This multi talented person is also fond of reading and gets its inspiration from the well known Bengali writers that can include Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra.

Hailakandi

Hailakandi

Hailakandi is considered to be one of the first as well as the oldest subdivisions that can be found in Assam. On 1st June 1869, the district was represented as the civil subdivision which was then upgraded to the district in the year 1989. Having an area of 1326.10 square km, the Hailakandi also has two forest reserves namely Katakhal reserve forest and Inner line reserve forest.

Besides the reserve forest, this district also shares an inter state border on its south with Mizoram which is as long as 76km besides the inter district border with Cachar and Karimganj districts on the other side.  Almost half of the district is sheltered by the forests and the remaining half has 33% of area under cultivation. There are seventeen tea gardens in the Hailakandi district

The Hailakandi district also possesses a city named Hailakandi. Besides being the city, it is also the municipal board in the Hailakandi district in Assam. This district owns seventeen beautiful tea gardens.  

According to the census 2001, the projected population of the Hailakandi district is said to be 542872 in which there are 280513 males and 262359 females. Almost 57% of the population that is 312849 consists of Muslims while there are 223191 Hindu populations and the least population of 5424 is taken by the Christians. The density of population in the Hailakandi district is higher than that of the average density of population in the state. It is 451 per km2  while that of the state is 340 per km2.    

It consists of two towns namely Hailakandi as specified above and Lala. The Hailakandi district has 5 development blocks namely Katilcherra, Algapur, Lala, South Hailakandi and Hailakandi Development blocks. This district is a hone to numerous different communities where the people belonging to different castes and cultures live together.

Karimganj

In the late nineteenth century Karimganj become division of the Sylhet District of british India. In 1983 Kaimganj became a part of Cachar district on Assam during partition of India after being served from Sylhet. Karimganj is now a district in Assam with its headquaters in Karimganj Town.   

The Karimganj district is spread out in an area of 1809 km². Karimganj is surrounded by Hailakandi district on the east, Cachar District on the northeast, Mizoram on the South, Tripura in the southwest area and on the north it is surrounded by Bangladesh. Karimganj is divided by Bangladesh by the Kushiyara River which floes between them. Noti Khal is a long and a winding canal in the district meandering in the course of the town. However, due to road transport and constructions the canal has been blocked in some areas with the help of land fills and embankments.

Karimganj is connected to the rest of India through rail and road transport. Karimganj acts as a junction of connection between Tripura and Assam. Road transport is more preferable by the people than rail transport. Many busues are used for traveling between the district and Guwahati daily. Many inter state busses are also available for traveling. The nearest airport to the Karimganj district is in Kumbhigram near Silchar. Water transport is also used for seasonal friegh and vargo shipments which links between Kolkata via Bangladesh. Water ways play an important role in trade and commercein north east India. It is capable of transporting hugr amounts of cargos and shipments heping in expansion of import and export among the countries.

Karimganj is a mixture of five assembly constituencies namely Karimganj North, Karimganj South, Patherkandi, Badarpur, and Rathbari. All of these are a part of the Karimgang Lok Sabha constituency. 
Karimganj consist of 5 Tehsils or development circles, 3 towns, 7 community development blocks, 5 police stations, 96 gram panchayats and 7 anchalik panchayats.

Silchar commonly known amongst the people as the headquarters of Assam’s Cachar District is also recognized as a famous tourist attraction and is one of the places that can be visited again and again.

Some of the most famous places that must be visited by any tourist visiting Silchar include the Sri Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Temple. This temple is in Udharband and on the way to the airport. It is 17 km way from Silchar. The temple was established with the images of Goddess in the year 1806. The temple has been reconstructed and is no more the same as it was years back.

Other than the Sri Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Temple, Khaspur is also one of the places that stay in the lists of tourists that have to be visited. This place is near the temple and at a distance of mere 3 km from Brajamohan Ashram. This place was the capital of the Cachhar kings during the 1690. The remains of the capital of Cachhar kings have a great importance and also are a visiting spot for the travelers and tourists. Though the original palace at this place does not exist anymore, all that is left there is the main entrance gate of the palace that is called as the Suryadwar. The main entrance is made in elephant patterns.

Other than this, there are various other places that can include Bubhan Hill which is situated on the Bhubaneswar Temple. Also there is Maniharan Tunnel which is at a distance of 5 km from Bhubaneswar Temple. It is believed that God Krishna used this tunnel. Holy river Tribeni flows down this tunnel. This place also has a temple complex where Hanuman, Lord Rama, Lakshmana as well as Garurha are worshipped.

G.C.College, Silchar, Assam

G.C.College

Gurucharan College or G.C.College laid its foundation stone on 15th June in the year 1935. Formerly, the college was located in the uninhabited house of Mr. Pramode Chandra Dutta. It was located at Rongpur on the bank of river Barak.

Regrettably because of the erosion of the riverbank, the location of the college was temporarily shifted to the Silchar Normal School Campus. But the temporary problems that had to be faced for the accommodation of the college were over in a short duration. With the help of perseverance from the different quarters, the college authorities were able to attain vast area of approximately 7.1 acres from the Silchar Municipal area.

The college began functioning for achieving the goals and missions with the least number of students being just fifteen. With the growth and quality education, the G.C.College today prides themselves on having approximately 3000 students. Unlike earlier, now the college has a full fledged educational institution offering higher education to the students up to undergraduate level. Not only is the G.C.College known for offering higher education at undergraduate level but also it has gained the identity in a distinct manner for being the institution for having a self identity in the field of higher education in the eastern part of the country.

In the early years, Gurucharan College was affiliated with the Calcutta University. In the year 1949, the college was affiliated to the Gauhati University in the state of Assam. This was not the end for the affiliation of the college, after the establishment of Assam University; G.C.College is affiliated to the Assam University since 1994. Also, the college is enrolled under the 2(F) and 12 (B) by UGC or the University Grants Commission. It also offers Higher Secondary (10+2) and Three Year Degree Course (1+1+1) in Arts, Commerce as well as Science streams.

North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong

The North-Eastern Hill University had been set up by one of the acts of Parliament of which the notification was given on the 19th July 1973. The university was set up with an objective of disseminating and advancing the knowledge by the means of instructional as well as research skills in the branches of learning. North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST)

The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology or NERIST is a premier institute of science and technology established by the government of India in 1986. The institute is located at Nirjuli, Itanagar in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The institute is situated in the Papum Pare district of Nirjuli in Arunachal Pradesh at the foot hills of Eastern Himalayas. The institute is 19km away from the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar on national highway 52A.  

The NERIST is managed by the board of directors. The board of directors comprise of representatives of the Minister of the Human Resource and development, AICTE, the eight beneficiary states of the North Eastern region and eminent educationist. The head of the NERIST society is the state governor of Arunachal Pradesh. The society consists of all the education ministers of the North Eastern States. Currently the head of the board of directors is Dr. Gautam Baruha, the director of Indian Institute of Science and Technology, Guwahati.

Initially NERIST was set up by the government as a project by NEC or the North Eastern Council for providing an education system that can prove to be helpful in creating technological manpower at diverse levels for bringing a developmental change in the North Eastern part of the country.

The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology is considered to be a unique institution that has exceptional, original as well as innovative academic programmes. The approach adopted by this college is the encouragement of the policy of vocationalization after the schooling that is after 10+2. Also the aim is to let only the motivated students opt for the degree level where the other students can opt for going out of the institute for enhancing their profession by having professional experience of a few years. At any time in the future, if these students make a decision to return back to the institution for improving on their qualification, they would be allowed to be a part of the institute for enhancing their knowledge.

After the 1st April 1994, the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology is completely funded as well as controlled by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi. Other than this, the institute also achieved a milestone in May 2005 by being recognized as the deemed university.

Assam Institute of Management is the organization that came into existence in the year 1988. Established by the Government of Assam, the Assam Institute of Management provides post graduate courses in management in the state of Assam. It was established by the Government of Assam for the promotion of professional education in the north eastern part of India.

With the college campus located in Guwahati, Assam Institute of Management is well known as it is the only completely self directed institute all over the country that is sponsored by the State Government in India. 

The institute is successful in gaining reputation as it has a vision for being the centre of brilliance and excellence in the field of areas related to management as well as the other allied disciplines. They believe that it could be done in the best manner by advancing teaching facilities, research, training, networking and consultancy. 

Assam Institute of Management is the only institution in the North Eastern India that carries out Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management of IIM grade. It is the two year program which is permitted by All India Council for Technical Education or AICTE.

Other than Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management, the Assam Institute of Management also offers to the students Post Graduate diploma in Travel and Tourism Management industry.         

For being eligible for the Post Graduate Diploma courses, the candidate applying should have a Bachelor’s Degree with the minimum percentage of 50% from any of the recognized universities. Other than the students who have completed their graduation, the candidates who are appearing in their final year examination can also apply for the Post Graduate Diploma offered by the institute.

After being eligible for the admission, the candidate has to appear in the Common Entrance Test which is held by the AIMS test for Management Admission. The candidates qualifying in the entrance test have to appear for round of Group Discussions and Personal Interview. On the basis of the combined score, admission is granted to the deserving candidates.        

Tezpur University, Assam

Located in Tezpur in the state of Assam, Tezpur University is the central University. The chancellor of the Tezpur University is Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, the Governor of Assam and the post of Vice Chancellor is taken over by Prof. M.K. Chaudhuri.

The campus of the university is located at the Napaam which is approximately 15 kilometers east of Tezpur. Not only is the university campus located at Napaam, it is also the head quarter of the Assam’s Sonitpur District.

Tezpur University is one of the first universities to introduce Master of Technology in Computational Seismology. Besides, it is also amongst one of the Indian universities for having a Department of Energy in the University campus. Not only this, the Electronics Department at the Tezpur University is also one of its kinds for introducing interdisciplinary Masters of Technology course in Bioelectronics.

Under the nine schools, there are twenty nine different departments.

Other than the hostels that are offered by Assam University, there are other privately owned hostels in the nearby areas of Dwarbond and Irongmara for the comfort of University students.

The computer centre inside the university campus is meant for the use both by the faculty of the departments as well as by the students.

Since the distance between Silchar and University is quite high, there is transport facility made available for the students. Keeping in mind the convenience of the students, there are two buses for the students that carries the students from Silchar to Campus and back to Silchar.  

Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam

Established under the Assam Agricultural University Act 1968, the Assam Agricultural University was set up on 2nd January 1969. The university has various campuses and the headquarters of the university is situated at Borbheta which is at a distance of approximately 5 kilometers from railway station as well as the bus station. Also the headquarters of Assam Agricultural University is just at a distance of 2 kilometers from the Johrat airport.

The influence of the university is made available for the aspiring students of the intact Assam in respect with the research, teaching as well as the extension education provided in the fields of allied sciences and agriculture.

Established in 1960, Gauhati Medical College was the second college offering medical studies in the state of Assam. Located in Guwahati, the Gauhati Medical College was started with the growth of the demands and needs for the health education as well as health care. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong

Government of India has recently setup the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management in the state of Meghalaya. The Rajiv Gandhi India Institute of Management, Shillong is the youngest and the seventh branch of the Indian Institute of Management which is a chain of the best management institute all over India. He institute is named after the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The foundation stone of RGIIM Shillong was laid down by Shri Arjun Singh who is the HRD Minister on December 1, 2007. The institute was inaugurated by The Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr Donkupura Roy on July 4, 2008.

 IIM Shillong has been setup with the main objective of growth and mobilization of research and management education in the North Easter area of India. The Union of Human Resource Management and the chief minister of the North eastern states altogether came to the decision of setting up IIM Shillong during a review meeting held in June 2004.

Prof. Ashoke K Dutta, alumnus of IIM Calcutta is the director of IIM Shillohe has a work experience of more than 30 years working with Public Sector Enterprises, Multinational Corporations and Indian Business Houses. He is an experience holder of working with various industries like Pharmaceuticals, Fast moving consumer products media and education.


IIM Shillong has a unique curriculum with a mixture of compulsory as well as elective courses along with supplementary courses on industrial specialization. The institute focuses on the keeping up with the academics with the purpose of developing new business models. The IIM has a special place of its own in academics as it provides students with the environmental and social perspective of management.

Currently IIM shillong only offers 2 year Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP) but in future will offer many courses like Fellow Program in Management (FPM). In addition to the courses offered IIM Shillong offers Research and consultancy, Development Programs. The institute also has an Accelerated Learning Center conducting short term certificate courses.

Admissions in IIM Shillong are on the basis of CAT examinations conducted in November every year. Like other IIM institutions there are no reservations for students of Meghalaya or North eastern India.

Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, Assam

Formally established on 3rd November 1947 at Dibrugarh, Assam Medical College was earlier known amongst the people as Dr. John Berry White Medical School which had been established in the year 1902. The Assam Medical College is the first medical college in the north eastern area of India.

After the founding of the medical colleges in other parts of Assam that is at Guwahati and the other one at Silchar, the Assam medical college is considered to be the tertiary medical referral centre for the areas in upper Assam along with some of the areas in the neighboring states. One of the most prominent neighboring areas includes Arunachal Pradesh for which the Assam medical college serves as the Medical Referral Centre.

Along with the medical courses there are numerous other paramedical courses in Midwifery and Nursing along with the Diploma course in Pharmacy. The college is ranked as one amongst the top 10 medical colleges all over the country.

There is a lavish hostel area for the students coming from different parts of the country can stay. The college is located in between the lush tea estates of the Dibrugarh area. There are some of the buildings that are built in accordance with the British architecture while there are others that are constructed recently for upgrading the college and making it one of the premier Asian medical institutes.

Besides the hostels for students there are staff quarters that let the students maintain constant contact with the professors. Not only the principals are highly qualified but the teachers at the Assam Medical College are also renowned and some of the best teachers in their respective fields.
