Jatinga Bird Mystery

Jatinga Bird Mystery

Birds are one of the most beautiful creations of god. Can they commit suicide..? Confused…? Many researchers, for years, are bewildered by the mystery which happens in Jatinga every year. Still it remains a mystery that whether they are killed or it’s a natural death or they also commit suicide.

Jatinga, a place which will spellbind you with its natural beauty is located in a spur of half long ridge of North Cachar hills in the district of Assam. A mysterious place where every year lots of migratory birds comes and dies. No one knows the reason of their dying. Apart from its natural beauty, this unsolved mystery makes this place a hot destination for the bird lovers.

This mysterious phenomenon of birds dying occurs in monsoon season. Jatinga is obscured by the mist and the fog during this season. The mysterious incident occurs only when air is foggy, misty and cloudy. If there are few drops of rain it acts as an added advantage. from the studies it has been deciphered that evening time of 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm is most suitable for this mysterious phenomena/ mostly it take place in the month of September to November
The winds blow, during the foggy moonless night, from north to south. The birds become inactive and lethargic. The birds do not fly and behave as if they are half dead. This may happens because the birds are shocked with the temperature conditions present in Jatinga. Some of the rare species are also found among the hundred of species which are found dead there. Some of them are Tiger Bittern, Kingfishers, Pond Heron, Little Egret, Black Bittern etc. Various studies have shown that there is a relation between the breeding of birds and these deaths.

Several ornithologists have tried to study this mystic phenomena but nobody has ever came up with any kind of hypothesis which could explain this mystery. Some says that villagers in the jatinga puts trap for these birds attracting them the light source. But similar kind of incident has occurred in Philippines under the same weather conditions (windy, foggy and moonless night). This phenomenon has no answer till yet but it attracts ornithologist from vivid regions.

Committee on People and Environment opposes Barak Dam

Committee on People and Environment opposes Barak Dam

SILCHAR, April 7: Committee on People and Environment (COPE) in a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of Manipur expressed its deep concern at the construction of Tipaimukh Dam despite opposition from naturalists and environmentalists of Northeast. There have been protest demonstrations by NGOs in Manipur, Mizoram and Barak Valley of Assam, besides that of in Bangladesh. According to Piyush Kanti Das, general secretary of COPE, the dam when completed would spell doom in the region concerned.
Specifying the impact, Das said it would have adverse effect on the bio-diversity since the proposed dam lies at the confluence of Indo-Burma, Indo-Malayan and Indo-Chinese hotspot zone. These areas are marked by the presence of a large species of plant and animal which are now on the verge of extinction around the world. A large number of them have been enlisted as endangered on the IUCN Red Data Book and the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
Moreover, he pointed out many of the tribal people who include Hmar, Kuki, Mizo, Zeliangrong and others who have been living for generations in the area would be displaced, raising question about their rehabilitation. Besides, the dam being located in the seismic zone-V, in the event of quake and crack, vast population along with their hearths and homes would be badly affected. The age old Barak-Surma culture will be lost forever in the abysmal of history.
The memorandum at the same time focus on other important impact issues of flash flood, water scarcity, crop cultivation, navigation, siltation, ecological imbalance, pollution, extinction of aquatic forms of life as well as livelihood change.
In view of the extensive downstream environmental impact, a scientific study should be jointly conducted by experts from NGOs dealing with nature, IITs, NIT and universities from the dam site to sea mouth. It should be done at the initiative of the Government of India and Bangladesh. It should assess the possible detrimental impact on the environment and life of inhabitants along the catchment areas at large. COPE apprehends if the dam comes up, it will play havoc with greenery as well as people both in India and Bangladesh.
Around two hundred people from different communities and tribes took part in a demonstration against the construction of dam before the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar today. The agitationists were addressed by Pavitra Daimari, executive president of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Jayanti Singh, president Maira Paibi, Pantinglong Rongmei, president Tribal Sangha, Aminul Haque, advisor AASU, advocate Babu Singh, Nirmal Das, general secretary Assam Mazuri Sramik Union, Dr Shanti Kumar Singh, president and Pijush Kanti Das, general secretary COPE and SAVE and others. The memorandum was also addressed to the President, Prime Minister as well as Joyram Ramesh, Minister of Forest and Environment. THE SENTINEL

Rebels serve ‘quit notice’

Rebels serve ‘quit notice’

SILCHAR, April 7: Non Manipuris belonging to various communities, specially from the plains of other parts of Northeast and the country are in panic, gripped as they are with fear psychosis. Different Manipur-based rebel groups which include People’s Liberation Army (PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Revolutionary People’s Forum (RPF), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak), as well as other sundry outfits have issued ‘quit notice’ on them living in various parts of the State.

The notice served on March 28 has a deadline of three months by which the non Manipuris have to leave the State. Otherwise, it warns of serious consequences. The warning has been given out in local newspapers of the State. In the meantime, around 25 families have already left, according to intelligence sources here. The panic ridden families have taken shelter with their relatives and friends. It is to be recalled that in 2003, 125 families deserted their homes and sought refuge in the Lakhipur area of Cachar. Around 25 thousand employees serving in Central, State and private establishments are in dilemma and are at crossroads, considering the threat perception. While insurgency in other Northeast States is on the wane, Manipur continues to be the hotbed of a number of militant organizations with safe bases and refuges in the hills and dales of the State, besides easy access to Myanmar. Even intensified flush out operations by security forces are unable to rein in them. THE SENTINEL

ATM fiasco rattles customers

ATM fiasco rattles customers

SILCHAR, April 7: As the banking services are becoming mechanized, customers find it easy for their money transactions besides availing themselves of the various facilities. But, it is also becoming cause of worry and anxiety for them often. Some of the customers of State Bank of India today at a press meet held in the premises of a school shared their problems with the mediapersons. Champak Chandra Saha, a teacher, said when he went to draw an amount of Rs 2,600 only from his account at the ATM counter at Ambicapatty, he was amazed to read the screen display which indicated ‘your last transaction cancelled. Sorry unable to process’. More amazing, his account has been debited for the amount he did not receive. Similar are the experiences of Anju Devi, home maker, who could not draw Rs 20,000 from her account on February 2. Sunil Kumar Singh and Sapan Acharjee too could not draw Rs 15,000 on April 5 and Rs 4,000 in June 2008. Till date, non of them has received the amount lost in the ATM. Champak Saha quoted a RBI circular to say that if a customer does not get his money within 12 days, he will have to be paid Rs 100 per day from the disputed date till the bank makes payment to him. He has advised the customers to bring to the notice of the Branch Managers their problem and lodge complaint in this regard for necessary actions. He pointed out that while security guards are posted at the ATM of other banks, why similar arrangement should not be made by SBI. THE SENTINEL

Stress laid on fishery development

Stress laid on fishery development

SILCHAR, April 7: At a meeting held in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar presided over by ADC Baranya Das and attended by the District Fishery Development Officer and the Chief Executive Officer UC Kalita and representatives of NGOs, after threadbare discussion, it was decided to go for campaign among common people about the need for the increased pisciculture and to adopt various measures for the implementation of fishery preservation rules and regulations. In view of the random use of nets round the year by people in order to hook fishes, it has been decided to enforce strictly the use of prescribed size of nets which should not be less than seven to 14 cm. Use of nets of small sizes are playing havoc with the fishes during their germination period. In order to preserve the fishes, Pratul Deka of the department laid stress on the implementation of the five rules of Fishery Act and its violation has to be strictly dealt with for meting out punishment to the violators as per law. Bishnupriya Manipuri bodies hail Kartik Sena Sinha

SILCHAR, April 6: Five different Bishnupriya Manipuri bodies-Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha, Bishnupriya Manipuri Students’ Union, Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Andolan Parishad, Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahila Sangstha and NGO Khowrang today jointly accorded reception to Kartik Sena Sinha, Patharkandi BJP MLA, who made a volte-face and voted for Congress in the Rajya Sabha elections along with three other MLAs of the party Dr. Rumi Nath, Shambhu Singh Mallah and Abhijit Hazarika.
All the four MLAs have been suspended from the party, pending final decision by the party president for their expulsion from BJP. The spectre of action by the highest decision making body of BJP seems to have no impact on Kartik Sena Sinha who received a hero’s welcome on his arrival at Kumbhirgram Airport. A cavalcade of his supporters and fans in four and six wheelers and motor bikes carried him to Sri Sri Bhubaneshwar Sadhu Thakur Ashram at Tarapur of this town where he was accorded reception by the Bishnupriya Manipuri social, cultural, literary and student bodies.
Dr. Deben Sinha, president of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha appreciated the decision of Kartik Sena Sinha to vote for Congress as he did it in the larger interest of the community. The Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi assured him of Economic Development Council for Bishnupriya Manipuris. The reception meeting was presided over by Chandra Kanta Sinha, poet and litterateur. Others who spoke on the occasion heaping praises on Kartik Sena Sinha included Haridas Sinha, Ashish Ranjan Sinha, Uday Sinha, Swapan Sinha among others. In his brief speech, Kartik Sena Sinha justified his decision to vote for Congress, keeping in mind the over all interest of his backward community. THE SENTINEL

I don’t need minister’s certificate: Bithika Dev

I don’t need minister’s certificate: Bithika

SILCHAR, April 6: Reacting sharply to Excise Minister Gautam Roy’s allegation that she was a failure as MLA, Bithika Dev today retorted that she did not need the certificate from a Minister who belonged to another district as the people of Silchar would judge her performance.
The Silchar MLA said she did not bother about what a Minister says about her performance. Speaking in a dharna organized by Sammilito Samskritik Mancha at Silchar Railway Station, Bithika Dev said, except for AUDF MLA Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya and she, no MLA from Barak Valley including the Minister had ever raised the issue of renaming the Silchar Station, and it proves that they do not have any sentiment for the martyr.
Meanwhile, Cachar district Congress president Karnendu Bhattacharjee also criticized Gautam Roy for his comments about the Silchar MLA. Bhattacharjee said, Roy was not authorized to assess Dev’s performance as an MLA, it was the people of Silchar who would judge her performance. Rejecting Roy’s demand for a fresher in Silchar Assembly segment, Bhattacharjee said, only party high command had the authority to nominate candidate. THE SENTINEL

Gautam Roy hints at wife Mandira Roy, as next candidate

Roy hints at wife as next candidate

SILCHAR April 6: Excise Minister Gautam Roy today kept the Karimganj District Congress virtually awe-struck when he hinted that his wife Mandira Roy could be fielded in the next Assembly elections in Karimganj.
Addressing a meeting of the district committee Roy said, in Karimganj, the Congress party had no strong candidate, and hence woman candidate from the neighbouring district Hailakandi could be fielded here. He, however, did not utter anyone’s name.
Yet everyone present could easily realize who he was talking about. Earlier Gautam Roy, to everyone’s utter disbelief, silenced Municipality Chairman Dr. Manas Das halfway in his speech. Dr. Das was explaining the problem his Board was facing in draining out clogged water. But Roy rudely asked him to sit down and said Dr. Das would not be able to solve the civic problem in the town.
Interestingly, Roy was instrumental in making Dr. Das, a debutant politician, the chairman of the Municipality Board. It was believed that Roy would project Dr. Das as the next candidate for Karimganj Assembly seat. But, today Roy made a volte-face hinting at his wife as the next candidate. THE SENTINEL

Congress should field a fresher in Silchar: Gautam Roy

Congress should field a fresher in Silchar: Gautam Roy

SILCHAR, April 5: Sontosh Mohan Dev might not be in power, Excise Minister Gautam Roy’s tirade against the former Union Minister did not seem to die down. In an interview with The Sentinel, Roy even went to say that defeat in the Lok Sabha election had derailed Dev’s mental ability. Making a scathing attack on the senior leader, Roy said Dev had duped the people of Barak Valley with bogus promise that Lumding-Silchar broad-gauge would be completed by 2012. “I tell you, broad-gauge will never by completed by 2012 as tender for tunnel number 10 was still lying with the Rail Ministry”, maintaining this Roy said, Dev should have involved State’s Ministry and then only broad-gauge could be completed in the stipulated time. Roy did not solely concentrated on the former Union Minister, rather he directed against Dev’s MLA wife Bithika Dev. Roy said, Bithika’s performance in the Assembly was horrible and thus party should field some new faces in the next Assembly election in Silchar. Roy however uttered a few words of praise for Silchar Municipality Chairperson Susmita Dev. Roy said, he was aware that a group of ruling party Ward Commissioners had been creating problem for Susmita which they should not have done. “I have talked to Susmita and advised her to continue her work along with all the Ward Commissioners unlike her father.” Roy openly admitted that in the forthcoming election the ruling party have to face anti-incumbency factors, particularly due to price rise of the essential commodities. But this would not pose any threat for the Congress, mainly because of two reasons- first, everybody are aware that price rise was a national phenomenon and even in the non-Congress States, the picture was same. Secondly, there was no strong opposition in the State which could challenge the ruling party. Roy said, 2011 Assembly votes would be his last election. “For almost two and half decades I have been fighting election, I am now sick of it. New generation should come”, confessing this Roy however maintained that, since nobody from his constituency had come up with profound promise, he was compelled to fight the election again in 2011. He, however, hinted that in 2014 general election, he might contest from Silchar LS seat provided the party high command nominates him. THE SENTINEL

‘Ajmal had silent support for my voting for Congress’

Ajmal had silent support for my voting for Congress’

SILCHAR, April 5: “With the silent support of AUDF supremo, I have voted in favour of the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election,” stated Badarpur MLA Anwarul Haque, who had been suspended from the AUDF for violating party diktat to vote for the Opposition candidate Jayanta Baruah. Making his first press-meet after the recent Rajya Sabha episode, Haque claimed that he had intimated his decision of casting vote in favour of the ruling party candidate, to AUDF president Badrauddin Ajmal, who did not protest. Rather Ajmal had advised him to do any step for the betterment of his Muslim Fishermen Community, claimed Haque. He reiterated that he had done no mistake by casting his vote in Congress’ favour. Even in earlier RS elections, the AUDF had voted in favour of Congress candidate Dr Manmohan Singh. In presidential election, too AUDF voted for Congress candidate Pratibha Patil. Admitting that this time party had issued whip to vote for Baruah, Haque argued that, he personally could not accept Baruah’s candidature as the latter was an ‘anti-Bengali’ person. Haque even said, Baruah was accused of Nelli massacre. Haque today said that he still had a cordial rapport with Ajmal, who as he claimed, had made a telephone call even today. Haque said he was still very much a part of AUDF and considered Ajmal as his leader. THE SENTINEL

Sontosh Mohan Dev hits back at Gautam Roy

SILCHAR, April 5: Silchar District Congress today virtually warned Excise Minister Gautam Roy not to make further derogatory remarks against former Union Minister Sontosh Mohan Dev. DCC general secretary Arun Dutta Majumder told the mediapersons here today that, Roy’s unpleasant comment against a senior party leader was unwarranted and Congress workers of Silchar would not sit idle anymore. It is to be noted that Roy, on Sunday told in an INTUC meeting that Dev had lost senility after conceding defeat in the last general election. He further accused Dev of duping common people by false promise of broad-gauge project by 2012.
Dev addressing a press meet today countered Roy’s allegations. Dev said, he had written a dozen letters to persons like Prime Minister, AICC President, Planning Commission Chairman, Chief Minister and PWD Minister of Assam for fund for Kalain road. DCC president Karnendu Bhattacharjee also took initiative to get the fund released. But when the fund was released, Roy jumped into the scene and to claim his credit, started vilifying against Dev. Maintaining that he lost the last election only due to inner conflict of the party, Dev said, he wanted to contest the Rajya Sabha election.
Accordingly he contacted Urban Development Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala and the latter assured him support. But when he contacted Roy, the latter rudely rejected his plea. “Roy told me why should I support you? Did you support me when I was in CBI trouble?” Informing this Dev said, he had helped Roy when he was in trouble following CBI inquiry into his alleged role in kidnap and murder of his brother-in-law as well as BJP leader Pratul Dev. Hinting that his daughter Susmita Dev would try to get party nomination in 2014 general election, Sontosh Mohan today said, Susmita was not interested in contesting Assembly election. THE SENTINEL
